Three things that change from one area to the next
A home farewell looks much the same everywhere. What changes is everything around it: whether you can bury in your own garden, whether there's a pet cemetery within driving distance, and what a home-visit vet or viewing room costs. Those three things decide which kinds of funeral are realistic for you.
- Burial rules. Some places allow home burial with depth and distance limits; others ban it outright.
- What's nearby. Cities tend to have crematories with farewell rooms. Rural areas may have one provider, or none close by.
- Price levels. Vet fees and cemetery plots follow local living costs, sometimes by a surprising margin.

How pet funeral costs vary across the US
Many families want the goodbye itself at home, with the vet coming to them. That fee varies hugely by state. Hawaii is the most expensive state for it and Mississippi the least, and the difference runs to several hundred dollars for the same visit.

Cemetery prices follow a similar pattern. Nationally, dog burial in a pet cemetery averages $831[4], but plots near big cities cost far more. Hartsdale, outside New York City, holds its graves at a density of ~21,600 per acre[5] by our estimate, which tells you how scarce and valuable the land is. Home and cemetery burial rules in different countries
If you're planning a graveside farewell at home, check the rules first, then use our guide on holding a pet funeral at home for the rest of the day. They're usually about protecting water supplies, so they focus on depth and distance from wells and streams. In England, for example, the Environment Agency's animal burial guidance asks for at least a metre between the bottom of the hole and the water table.

Customs
How pet funeral customs differ around the world
In the UK, burying a pet at home is common, far more so than using a pet cemetery, according to the Competition and Markets Authority's survey of pet owners. In Japan, formal pet funerals are widespread, with around 130 companies in the national pet funeral association, although pets are still legally classed as waste there. In the US, a minority of families choose a cemetery, but those who do often hold a proper graveside service.

Elsewhere, animal welfare charities sometimes fill the gap. In Queensland, Australia, the RSPCA's memorial packages with individual cremation publish both a price and a return window (from AUD 250; within 14 days[11]), which gives families a known date to plan a small farewell around. In Canada, some crematories near larger cities have a family room for a short visit, so ask when you call.

Questions people ask
Can I bury my pet in my back yard?
In many places, yes, but rules vary. England sets no minimum depth for small pets but asks for 1 m of soil over larger animals, Germany requires at least 50 cm, and some places such as Dubai don't permit it at all. In the US, check with your city or county before you dig.
How do I find a pet cemetery near me?
Search your state or city page below, ask your vet which cemeteries they work with, or send us a note with your ZIP code. When you find one, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
Why are pet funeral prices so different between cities?
Land, labor and demand. Cemetery plots are scarce near big cities, and home-visit vets charge more where living costs are high. For example, at-home euthanasia in Hawaii costs far more than in Mississippi. Always ask for a written local quote.
What if there's no pet crematory or cemetery nearby?
Many providers collect from a wide area, and some vets arrange transport. You can still hold a farewell at home before collection. Tell us where you are and we'll look for providers who serve your area, including ones further afield.
