Pet Funerals in France: what to know
Whether you live in one of the big cities, such as Paris, Marseille and Lyon, or somewhere much smaller, a pet farewell in France comes down to three decisions: where it happens, who's there and what happens afterwards. This page explains how each works here, with real published prices and the local rules.
Families who have moved to France from elsewhere often find the local pet funeral customs unfamiliar: different names for services, different burial rules, different ways of returning ashes. If you might move again, keep the ashes in a sealed, labelled urn with the cremation certificate; travelling with them later is far simpler.
We cover 21 communities in France, from Paris, Marseille and Lyon to smaller towns.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
In France, cremation covers only around 44.91%[1] of deaths, so most families use a funeral home for relatives, and some funeral directors will quietly help with a pet: a room for an hour, a small casket, or the name of a pet cemetery they trust. It isn't usually advertised, so ask your family's funeral director directly.
We take the France percentage from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Pet farewell prices for France families
Across Europe, a pet funeral usually means individual cremation with the ashes returned, or a grave in a pet cemetery. Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250 [2]. Cremation prices vary by country and weight; the table shows published examples to give you a feel for France.
Smaller pets cost far less to cremate, which leaves more of the budget for the farewell itself. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg [3], and in France a 20 kg dog costs EUR 150–250 individually against EUR 70–120 collectively [4]. Ask providers near France for the same breakdown in writing.
| Country and service | Price | Notes |

| Germany: pet cemetery grave | EUR 150 to 250 [2] | About 120 pet cemeteries nationwide |
| Germany: individual cremation | EUR 165 to 375 [5] | Collective EUR 85 to 205 |
| France: individual cremation, 20 kg dog | EUR 150 to 250 [4] | Collective EUR 70 to 120 |
| Netherlands: individual dog cremation | about EUR 300 [6] | Average; some insurers reimburse part |

Before you dig or scatter in France
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than France as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
In France, your vet will usually offer individual or collective cremation; only individual returns the ashes. If your dog or cat was identified, the death should be recorded in the national I-CAD register. France also has a long pet-cemetery tradition, including the historic dog cemetery at Asnières-sur-Seine outside Paris, and many towns have a cimetière animalier nearby.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. Ask the clinic to keep your pet in their cold room for a day while you think.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, separate from the medical bill, so you can see what the farewell part costs.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
A tree or shrub planted over buried ashes gives you a place to stand on the anniversary. If you rent, a large planter works just as well and can move with you. Some families in France add a small engraved stone with the name and years, and hold a few quiet minutes there each year.

Questions people ask
What does a pet funeral cost in France compared with the US?
Prices differ by country and currency, but the pattern is the same: individual cremation costs more than communal, a cemetery grave more than cremation, and a farewell room or attended service adds to either. Published examples for France are in the table above; ask local providers for a written quote.
Where can I find a pet cemetery in France?
Pet cemeteries are most common around the larger cities in France, and some human cemeteries now have pet sections. Ask your vet, check your city page on this site or send us a note. When you call a cemetery, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in France?
Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [8], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [9]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.
How much does a pet funeral cost in France?
The farewell itself can cost almost nothing if it's held at home. The main costs are cremation or burial, plus any viewing, witnessed cremation or headstone. Big-city providers and cemeteries usually charge more; rural areas may add mileage. Ask any provider in France for a written, itemized total before you agree.
What usually happens at a pet funeral in France?
Most follow a loose shape: family gathers around the pet at home, at the clinic or in a farewell room at the crematory; someone says a few words; each person has a moment to say goodbye; then the pet is collected, cremated or buried. Many add one ritual, such as a candle, a flower or a letter. The whole thing often takes less than an hour.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in France?
Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land have their own rules, and many ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter low and downwind, away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
