The big picture
How funeral services sit on top of cremation or burial
Every pet funeral has two layers. Underneath is body care: cremation, water cremation, home burial or a cemetery plot. On top is the farewell: a viewing, a ceremony, a gathering or an online memorial. Providers often bundle them, which makes prices hard to compare.
Separate them when you ask for quotes. The body-care price is driven by your pet's size and whether the ashes come back. The farewell price is driven by time, space and staff. Viewing and farewell rooms: time together before cremation
A viewing is simply unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, sometimes at the vet or a funeral home. Your pet is laid on a bed or blanket, and you can sit, talk, stroke their fur and say goodbye without watching the clock.
It suits families who weren't there at the end, relatives arriving from out of town, and children who need to see that their pet has really died. Some providers include a short viewing in a private cremation; others charge by the half hour. Ask how long you can stay and whether you can bring music or a candle. Witnessed cremation: being there as it begins
In a witnessed or attended cremation, you're present when your pet is placed into the chamber, or you wait nearby while it happens. Some families want to see it through to the end. Others want certainty that the ashes they take home are only their pet's.
It almost always costs more than a standard private cremation, because the provider schedules staff and the chamber around you. In Japan, where attended cremation is common, one Tokyo memorial park prices it well above its individual cremation and includes a monk chanting sutras. In the US, availability varies, so raise it on your very first call. Posted US surcharges to witness or view run from $25 to $350, and by our estimate the middle of that spread is about $125[3]. Graveside services and pet cemetery burial
A pet cemetery gives you a permanent place to visit. The price usually covers the plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. In the US, one national insurer lists pet cemetery burial at $400-$1,500+[5], depending mostly on your pet's size. At the historic end, Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in New York performs 250–300[6] burials a year. Perpetual care there is priced as either a one-time fee or an annual one: USD 3,500 / USD 105 per year[7]. Ask any cemetery who owns the land and whether the plot is protected if the business is sold. In England, pet cemeteries must register with the government's animal health agency, as GOV.UK's pet cemetery guidance explains, so a UK cemetery should be able to show you its registration.
Burying at home is cheaper but depends on local rules, soil and whether you'll stay in the house. In England, the Environment Agency's guidance on animal burials sets no minimum rules for a small pet such as a dog or cat buried on your own land, though its one-metre depth guidance for larger animals is a sensible benchmark. Celebration of life: a relaxed gathering, often weeks later
A celebration of life is less formal than a funeral and often happens once the ashes are home. Think photos on a table, the pet's leash and bowl, a playlist, snacks, and people telling stories. It can be at home, in a park the dog loved or in a café's back room.

Online memorials and livestreamed farewells
A memorial page with photos and a guest book, or a video call during a home ceremony, lets people join from anywhere. It's the fastest-growing part of the industry: one market forecast expects digital memorials to grow about 13.83%[8] a year.
You don't need to pay for this. A free video call and a shared photo album work well. Paid memorial sites add permanence and design, so check how long the page stays up and whether you can download everything if the site closes.

What is included in a pet funeral service?
It depends on the provider. A basic package may cover collection, private cremation and a simple urn. Fuller packages add a viewing room, a witnessed cremation or a graveside service, flowers and a keepsake. Ask for a written list of everything included, and what each extra costs on its own.
Is pet cemetery burial more expensive than cremation?
Usually, yes. In the US, pet cemetery burial for a dog averages about $831[1], against about $260[11] for a private cremation. A headstone and ongoing grounds care can raise the cemetery total well beyond that, so ask what happens to the plot long term.
Can I have a viewing if my pet died at the vet?
Often, yes. Ask the vet to hold your pet until you or your family can come in, or ask the crematory whether it has a farewell room. Tell them early, because the vet may send pets to the crematory on a fixed collection day.
Do I need an officiant for a pet funeral?
No. Most families lead the farewell themselves. Some people invite a faith leader, a celebrant or a friend who speaks well, and some pet cemeteries and funeral homes can suggest one. If you'd like a religious blessing, ask your own community first.
Can I combine a funeral service with water cremation?
Yes. Water cremation, also called aquamation, still returns ashes, so you can hold a viewing beforehand or a celebration of life afterwards just as you would with flame cremation. Fewer providers offer it, so ask early and expect a slightly longer wait for the ashes.
