Plan your pet's farewell calmly, one detail at a time

A pet funeral-home package with viewing, service and burial has been estimated at $700–$1,000[1], while a garden goodbye can cost nothing. Either way, this worksheet keeps the details, and the people, on the same page.

  • Six farewell questions to answer or flag
  • Compare two venue or provider quotes
  • Share the plan with family before anything is booked

Plan your pet's farewell calmly, one detail at a time

What should I record before contacting the team?

Pet Funeral & Memorial Services uses this worksheet to prepare worldwide inquiries. Your entries stay in this page’s memory until you copy, download or open an email draft. Reloading clears the fields. Record the requested outcome and location, leaving unresolved choices as questions and sensitive medical or personal details out of a shared copy.

0 of 6 fields have an entry. This is a completion count, not a safety score or booking approval.

How do I compare two itemized quotes?

Pet Funeral & Memorial Services compares your entered amounts for worldwide inquiries; it does not supply market prices. Use two written quotes in one currency, counting each charge once. Leave unknown amounts blank and use zero only for confirmed inclusions or no charge. Put taxes and other separate charges in the final row.

The tool adds your entries. It does not estimate prices, recommend a provider or establish that two service definitions are equivalent.

How can I keep and share my planning record?

Pet Funeral & Memorial Services lets you keep this worldwide planning record with your answers, selected source and entered quote amounts. Copying or downloading creates a copy you control. Opening an email draft lets you review the text in your email app before sending; none of these actions automatically submits an inquiry.

Clear entries removes all worksheet fields, including quote amounts and currency. It does not delete a copy you already saved or an email draft.

Before you book

Why a written plan helps with a pet farewell

Farewells go wrong in small, avoidable ways: a venue that doesn't allow candles, a relative who assumed they'd keep the ashes, rain on an unsheltered lawn, or a host left sweeping up alone at dusk. None of these are about love for the pet. They're about details nobody wrote down.

The worksheet works just as well for a ten-minute goodbye in the garden as for a booked service. Small farewells still benefit from a named person to bring the ashes, a sentence or two agreed in advance and a plan for the moment everyone goes quiet and nobody knows what happens next.

A plan also protects your money. Venues, caterers and printers often ask for deposits that aren't refundable. Settling the timing and the guest list with the people who matter first, then booking, means you pay for the farewell you actually hold.

Field by field

How to fill in the six farewell boxes

Pick your country and type your town or region; there's no need for a street address. Then work through the six boxes. If something isn't decided, write it as a question with a name beside it, like "Ask park office about groups of 15".

  • Before or after cremation. Note which, and why. Before means soon and small; after means more time and more choice of place.
  • Venue permission and accessibility. Record who owns the venue, what they allow, and whether older guests or wheelchair users can reach it.
  • Remains custodian. If your pet or their ashes will be present, write who brings them and who takes them home.
  • Speakers and optional participation. List who wants to speak, and make clear that no one has to.
  • Weather backup. Name the indoor fallback or the date you'd move to.
  • End time and cleanup. Write a finishing time and the names of two people staying to tidy.

Comparing providers

Comparing two farewell quotes line by line

The worksheet's quote table splits costs into venue and staffing, ceremony preparation, printing, flowers or media, transport and cleanup, and taxes. Enter what's written on each quote and leave anything unclear blank so it shows as unknown.

Crematory extras are where totals diverge. One North Carolina provider charges $150[2] for a scheduled viewing in a private suite, while a Virginia provider adds $350[3] on top of any package for a witnessed cremation appointment. If one quote includes the viewing and the other lists it separately, the table makes that visible. Our services page explains what each of those extras usually covers.

The hardest conversation

Agreeing who holds the ashes, and who comes

When a pet belonged to a whole family, or to a couple who've since separated, the question of who keeps the ashes can be painful. Settle it before the farewell rather than at it. Some families divide ashes into small keepsakes; others agree that one person keeps them and the rest share in the scattering.

The same goes for the guest list. A pet farewell doesn't need to be inclusive in the way a human funeral is expected to be. Invite people who'll take the loss seriously: in the RSPCA's pet-loss survey, 34.5%[4] of bereaved owners had been told "it's just a pet". Our post on planning around the people attending looks at how to keep it right-sized.

Weather and access

Outdoor venues, cemeteries and the rain plan

Pet cemeteries often offer attended options. At one UK cemetery, burying a pet's ashes costs £60–£145[5] depending on whether you attend, and a formal attended burial with a coffin runs £980–£1,140[6] by weight. By our estimate, that formal attended burial costs about 51%[7] more than a green burial for the same size of pet at the same cemetery. Ask what shelter exists on site and whether the time slot can move if the weather turns. In England, GOV.UK's pet cemetery guidance sets out the registration and depth rules a cemetery must follow.

At home or in a park, a gazebo or a covered porch can be the whole backup plan. Write it down anyway, along with the step-free route for anyone who needs it. The home or outdoor ceremony comparison covers the access questions in more detail.

Next steps

Sharing your plan and getting options

When you're done, copy the plan, download it or open it as an email draft. Nothing is sent until you press send in your own email app, and reloading the page clears the fields, so save a copy first. Send it to the people involved and ask them to flag anything they'd change.

For venue or provider options, paste the plan into the request form and we'll reply by email. If you're unsure which detail to tackle next, the three-question farewell quiz can help you decide, and the memorial service planning guide covers the running order.

Questions people ask

How soon after my pet dies should I hold a farewell?

If you want your pet present, within a day or two, usually before cremation. If you'd rather gather around the ashes, there's no deadline; some families wait for a birthday or a season that meant something. Both approaches are common.

Does the worksheet book a venue or provider?

No. It's a planning record that stays in your browser. You can copy, download or email it, but nothing is booked or paid for. Send us the plan through the form if you'd like options, and we'll reply by email.

What should a pet farewell quote include?

Venue hire and any staff, preparation such as a viewing or a room setup, printed items, flowers or slideshow help, transport of your pet or ashes, cleanup and taxes. Ask for each on a separate line so you can compare two quotes properly.

Can children take part in a pet funeral?

Yes, if they want to. Give them simple optional roles like placing a flower or choosing a photo, and let them opt out at any time. Tell them beforehand what they'll see, especially if the pet will be present.

Who should keep the ashes if the family can't agree?

There's no single rule. Some families divide the ashes into keepsakes, some agree one person holds them, and some scatter them together. Settle it before the farewell so the day itself isn't overshadowed.
