How it works
Tick what you want, adjust the amounts, watch the total
The planner lists the costs families usually meet around a pet's death: euthanasia at the clinic or at home, pickup, private cremation, an urn, jewelry, a memorial stone, a paw print, a farewell or service and a memorial tree. Each line has a low and a high amount. Private cremation and an urn start ticked; tick the other items you want and the running total updates as you go.
Every amount is editable. When a provider quotes you a real figure, type it in and the range narrows. When you're done, copy or print the summary. It's a useful thing to hand a partner or sibling who's sharing the cost.
The numbers
Where the starting figures come from
The starting amounts come from published US cost studies where they exist, and each line is labelled in small print as a published average or a typical range, with sources listed under the tool. Euthanasia defaults use CareCredit's national averages: about $139[2] in a clinic and $410[3] at home for a dog. Private cremation uses CareCredit's US dog range of $206 to $473, around an average of $260[4].
communal $30-200; private $100-500+[5]
Embrace Pet Insurance lists US communal cremation at $30-$200, partitioned at $50-$250, private at $100-$500+ and aquamation at $80-$450.
$400-$1,500+[6]
Embrace lists US pet cemetery burial at $400-$600 for pets under 30 lb up to $800-$1,500+ for pets over 100 lb.
USD 50–1,000+[7]
Personalized pet urns range from about USD 50 to more than USD 1,000.
Smaller extras, such as home pickup, a clay paw print or an upgraded urn, use typical add-on ranges rather than a single survey, and are labeled that way. The "Farewell or service" line starts at zero, because a home farewell can genuinely cost nothing. You add flowers, printing, food or a venue as you plan them.
Example
Worked example: a 50 lb dog with a small celebration of life
Here's how one plan might look, with the planner's amounts edited to published prices and the celebration entered in the Farewell or service line. A family chooses a vet home visit for their 50 lb dog, private cremation with pickup, a simple urn, a clay paw print, and a celebration of life at home three weeks later with food for twenty people.
| Item | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| At-home euthanasia | $325[3] | $747 |
| Private cremation, 31–50 lb | $150[8] | $250 |
| Home pickup (one North Carolina provider) | $125[9] | $125 |
| Simple wooden urn | $30[10] | $150 |
| Paw print (clay impression to clay keepsake) | $10[11] | $76[12] |
| Celebration of life (the family's own guess for food and prints) | $60 | $250 |
| Total | $700 | $1,598 |
The spread is wide because each line has its own range. Swapping the home visit for a clinic appointment would cut the low end sharply: by our estimate, the vet visit plus private cremation comes to about $670[1] for a typical US dog at home, against about $399 at a clinic. Once the family gets two written quotes, the range tends to narrow a lot, because the guesses are replaced by real figures.

Your result
What your total tells you, and where to trim
Look at which lines dominate. For most families it's the vet visit and the cremation or burial, not the ceremony. Cemetery burial changes the picture, and the planner has no burial line, so price it separately or type it over the cremation line: nationally it averages $831[13] for a dog, and a full historic-cemetery burial like Hartsdale's is closer to about USD 7,000[14].
- Clinic instead of home visit: often the largest single saving.
- Standard container, urn later: you can choose a nicer urn months from now without pressure.
- Home ceremony instead of a venue: the most meaningful parts, such as memories, a candle and a reading, are free. Our celebration-of-life guide shows how to host one simply.
- Check insurance: some add-ons repay part of end-of-life costs, so check your policy before you book.

Later costs
Budgeting for a stone, a tree or jewelry later on
Some of the lines on the planner don't need deciding now. A memorial stone, a tree over the ashes or a pendant can wait weeks or months, and many families find those choices easier once the first shock has passed. Leave them unticked for now, or enter a rough amount so you know what's left for later.
When you're ready, the memorial stone planner checks how much wording fits on a small, medium or large stone and gives a typical price range. The memorial tree finder suggests trees for your climate and space, from a patio pot to a large yard, so you can price a sapling and planter before you buy.
Honest limits
What this planner can't tell you
It can't give you a local price. National averages hide big regional gaps: at-home dog euthanasia alone ranges from Mississippi to Hawaii by several hundred dollars. It also can't tell you what a particular provider includes, which is why a written, itemized quote matters more than any estimate.
Cost is a real worry for many families; in one published US study of pet owners, 61%[15] rated the cost of after-death care as a concern. If the total feels too high, remember that communal cremation, a clinic goodbye and a home farewell are all respectful choices. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority's final report requires vet practices to offer a communal option and set out their cremation prices, so you can ask for that list. Our aftercare options comparison sets them side by side.

Questions people ask
What is the average cost of a pet funeral?
There isn't one reliable average, because a pet funeral can be anything from a free home farewell to a cemetery burial with a headstone. The main costs are the vet, and cremation or burial. In the US, private dog cremation averages about $260[4] and pet cemetery burial about $831[13].
Does pet insurance pay for a funeral?
Usually not in full. Standard policies often cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary but not cremation or burial. Some insurers sell add-ons that repay part of end-of-life costs. Check your policy wording, or ask your insurer directly before you book.
How can I plan a pet funeral on a tight budget?
Choose a clinic goodbye rather than a home visit, consider communal cremation if you don't need the ashes back, and hold the farewell at home with candles, memories and a reading. None of the most meaningful parts of a farewell need to cost anything.
Is my budget saved anywhere?
No. The planner runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Copy or print the summary if you want to keep it. If you close the page, the numbers are cleared.
