Why start here
Why the cremation price shapes the whole farewell
Most families who plan a ceremony are also arranging a cremation. The ceremony can be free; the cremation can't. Knowing the cremation range first tells you how much room is left for a viewing, flowers, a stone or a gathering later on.
It also shapes timing. A private cremation returns ashes you can build a later celebration around. A witnessed cremation turns the cremation itself into part of the farewell. A communal cremation means the goodbye before collection is the main moment, because no ashes come home. Our services page explains each in more depth.
How it works
Five inputs, one price range
- Type of animal: it opens on Dog at 50 lb, with cat, rabbit, bird, horse and more in the list. Switching animal resets the weight to that animal's typical size.
- Weight: in pounds or kilograms. Size drives price more than anything else.
- Type: communal (no ashes back), partitioned, private, or witnessed.
- Country: US, UK, Canada, Australia or somewhere else, which shows US prices in dollars as a guide.
- Extras: home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, a paw print keepsake, an upgraded urn, or at-home euthanasia.
The result is a low-to-high total, a line-by-line table and a side-by-side view of private against communal for the same pet. Change any input and the numbers update straight away.
The numbers
Where the calculator's ranges come from
US ranges use CareCredit's national price bands by weight, from pets under 30 lb up to giants over 90 lb. For a small pet, that's communal $45-75; private $100-175[2]; for a pet over 90 lb, communal $150-200; private $350-450[3]. UK ranges use the Competition and Markets Authority's 2024 review of cremation prices, which found communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[4] than individual for the same weight.
communal $45-75; private $100-175[2]
CareCredit's pet cremation guide lists US communal cremation at $45-$75 and private at $100-$175 for pets up to 30 lb.
communal $50-100; private $200-300[5]
CareCredit lists US communal cremation at $50-$100 and private at $200-$300 for 51-70 lb pets.
communal $150-200; private $350-450[3]
CareCredit lists US communal cremation at $150-$200 and private at $350-$450 for pets over 90 lb.
Extras use broad placeholder ranges built into the tool rather than a survey: pickup $50 to $150, after-hours $75 to $200, a paw print $25 to $75 and an urn upgrade $50 to $300, all labeled as typical in the result. Published prices you can compare them with: home removal costs $125 at one North Carolina provider[6], rush cremation typically adds $50 to $150[7], and by our estimate paw-print add-ons have a median price of about $32[8]. Witnessed cremation is shown at 1.25 to 1.6 times private, our estimate from a Tokyo price list that prices both. US providers more often charge a flat add-on instead: published surcharges to view or witness a cremation range from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125[9].
Example
Worked example: a 12 lb cat, private cremation, home pickup
A family in Ohio wants a short home farewell for their 12 lb cat before the driver collects her, and her ashes back for a garden memorial in spring. They choose Cat, enter 12 lb, and pick private cremation, home or vet pickup and a paw print keepsake.
| Line | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Private cremation, up to 30 lb | $100[2] | $175 |
| Home or vet pickup | $50 | $150 |
| Paw print keepsake | $25 | $75 |
| Total | $175 | $400 |
| Communal instead (same extras) | $120 | $300 |
For comparison, UK large vet groups charged a median of about GBP 186.87[10] for individual cat cremation in 2024. With the cremation range known, the family sees that a candle, a reading and the paw print are all the farewell needs, and saves the rest toward a stone.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[11]

Being there
What a witnessed cremation adds to the cost
Witnessed cremation costs more because the provider schedules the chamber and staff around your family. US price lists rarely publish it, so ask directly. Japan gives a clear example: at one Tokyo memorial park, witnessed cremation for a medium dog, with a monk chanting, is priced well above the individual option. If you're unsure whether it's right for your family, read what happens at a witnessed cremation before you ask for a price.

What the calculator can't tell you
It can't give a local quote. City prices can sit well above national averages and rural ones below. It also can't confirm what a provider actually does: whether "private" really means your pet alone, or whether a viewing room is included. Ask for both in writing. The Cremation Association of North America certifies pet crematory operators, so it's also fair to ask whether the staff hold that certification.
Sources also disagree at the edges. CareCredit's average cat cremation of about $180[11] sits slightly above the top of its own under-30 lb private band, most likely because averages pick up city prices and bundled extras. That's normal for price data, and it's why the calculator shows a range rather than a single number.
And it doesn't include the rest of the farewell. For the full bill, including the vet, flowers and a memorial, use the memorial budget planner. If you're still choosing between cremation and burial, the aftercare options comparison lays them out side by side.

Questions people ask
Is a witnessed pet cremation much more expensive?
It usually costs more than a standard private cremation, because staff and the chamber are scheduled around you. US providers rarely publish the price, so ask directly. At one Tokyo memorial park, a witnessed service for a medium dog costs noticeably more than individual cremation.
Does the calculator include the cost of a funeral service?
No, it covers the cremation and common extras such as pickup, a paw print, an urn upgrade and a home euthanasia visit. For ceremony costs, such as flowers, printing, a venue or a stone, add them in the memorial budget planner.
Why is communal cremation so much cheaper?
Several pets are cremated together and no ashes are returned, so there's less handling and no individual tracking. The UK competition regulator found communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[4] than individual for the same pet weight. It's a respectful choice when you don't need ashes back.
Can I hold a farewell if I choose communal cremation?
Yes. The farewell simply happens before collection, since no ashes come home. Many families hold a short home ceremony, take a paw print or fur clipping, and later plant a tree or place a stone as a lasting memorial.
