The short answer
What's the average cost of burying a pet in a cemetery?
The national average for burying a dog in a US pet cemetery is about $831[1], according to a 2025 cost study, with a range of roughly $659 to $1,513. For a cat, the same study puts it at about $566[2]. Prices depend mostly on your pet's size, where you live, and what's included.
$831[1]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).
$400-$1,500+[3]
Embrace lists US pet cemetery burial at $400-$600 for pets under 30 lb up to $800-$1,500+ for pets over 100 lb.
~$600[4]
Across 15 US pet cemeteries' posted starting burial prices, the median entry price was about $600.
Those three figures are the national average for a dog, a pet insurer's typical range from small to very large pets, and our median of 15 US cemeteries' posted starting prices. By our estimate, burial costs about 3.2 times[5] as much as an average private cremation, largely because you're paying for land and its care.

What's included in a pet cemetery burial price?
A pet burial is usually several charges combined. Ask for each to be listed:
- The plot. Priced by size, and sometimes by location within the cemetery.
- Opening and closing. Digging and filling the grave. At natural burial grounds, this makes up 33–47%[16] of the total.
- Casket or container. A wooden casket costs $100 at one Oregon cemetery[17]; another Oregon site charges $170 to $250[18].
- Marker or headstone. Often extra, and often made to order.
- Maintenance. Annual or one-off fees for grounds care.
- Timing surcharges. One Washington district adds $450[19] for Saturday burials.
Markers
How much does a pet headstone add?
Markers range from simple to substantial. Engraved garden stones start at about $39[20] at the median of three US sellers; at one large retailer, upright granite pet headstones run $258–$628[21] and bronze-on-granite designs reach $1,098–$2,598[22]. A standard granite headstone at the Iowa humane society cemetery costs $400[7].
Engraving adds up quickly when charged by character: one engraving guide lists $8 to $35 per character[23], so a 40–60 character inscription can total $500 to $1,200. The memorial stone planner helps you fit your wording to the stone before you order.

Long-term costs
What does perpetual care cost?
Some cemeteries include care in the burial price; others charge yearly. Hartsdale in New York, the oldest US pet cemetery, charges $105 a year or $3,500 once[24] for perpetual care. That one-off fee equals about 33 years[25] of annual payments.
In the UK, annual fees at one Sussex cemetery run £45 to £75[26] per plot. Over ten years, green-plot maintenance there adds about 85%[27] to the original burial fee. Before you choose, add up what care will cost over the years you expect to visit.
Outside the US
How much is pet cemetery burial in the UK?
UK plot fees often run from £200 to £800 or more[28], depending on location and size. At one Sussex cemetery, a green burial costs £650–£810[29] by weight, while a formal burial with coffin and attended service costs £980–£1,140[30]. In Germany, a pet cemetery grave costs about €150 to €250[31].
Before you buy
What should you ask a pet cemetery before buying a plot?
- What's the total for my pet's size, with plot, opening and closing, container and marker listed separately?
- Is grounds care included, and for how long? Is there an annual fee after that?
- Is the land deeded as a cemetery, and what happens to graves if the business changes hands?
- Can I be present at the burial, and is there a charge for an attended service or a weekend slot?
- What marker sizes and materials are allowed, and can I supply my own?
- Can other pets, or my own ashes one day, be added to the same plot later?
Good cemeteries answer these readily and put them in writing. Visit in person if you can: look at how older graves are kept, since that's the best preview of how yours will look in twenty years. For the ceremony at the graveside, see our pet funeral checklist.
Saving money
Are there cheaper ways to have a pet grave to visit?
Yes. The biggest saving is burying ashes rather than a whole body. A cremains plot at the Colorado cemetery costs $400[32], against $1,500 for a whole-body small-animal burial. The Iowa humane society cemetery offers a combined cremation and burial package for $325 to $380[33].
- Bury the ashes in a cemetery plot, which also allows a later graveside ceremony on a date you choose.
- Choose a public cemetery district with a pet section, which can be much cheaper than private pet cemeteries.
- Avoid weekends if a surcharge applies.
- Order the marker later, when you've had time to choose, rather than as part of a package.
- Consider home burial, where it's allowed and you'll stay in the property. In England, the Environment Agency's animal burial guidance sets out the basic water-protection rules.

Questions people ask
Is pet cemetery burial more expensive than cremation?
Usually, yes. In the US, a dog's cemetery burial averages about $831, compared with about $260 for a private cremation, around 3.2 times as much. The gap comes from the land, grave digging and ongoing care. Burying cremated ashes in a smaller plot narrows the difference considerably.
Can I bury my pet's ashes in a pet cemetery?
Yes. Many pet cemeteries sell smaller plots or niches for cremated remains, often at a fraction of a whole-body plot. One Colorado cemetery charges $400 for a cremains plot. Some also let you add ashes to an existing grave later, for a small reopening fee.
Can people be buried with their pets?
In some places, yes. At Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in New York, the cremated remains of about 800 people are buried alongside their pets. Rules vary widely by state and cemetery, and most human cemeteries don't allow pets, so ask each cemetery directly.
What happens to a pet cemetery plot if the cemetery closes?
It depends on whether the land is legally protected. Some pet cemeteries have a deed restriction or trust that protects graves; others don't. Ask about ownership, deed protection and who is responsible for care if the business changes hands, and get the answer in writing.
Does pet insurance cover burial costs?
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't. Some add-ons help: Embrace's wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[34] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes, and Figo's extra care pack paid up to $250. Check your policy wording, since coverage is often limited to accidents or specific circumstances.
