Where a goodbye can happen in Strasbourg
Children often take a pet's death hard, and it may be their first loss. Clear, honest words help more than euphemisms, and a small role, like choosing a photo or drawing a picture, helps them take part. When sadness stays heavy for months, talking with a pet loss counselor is worth considering. So can lighting a candle on the anniversary.
A farewell for a pet in Strasbourg might be a quiet time together in the apartment, a brief farewell at the provider, or a small gathering in a garden or by the river when the ashes come back. Some families ask to be present for the cremation itself. Share your wishes when you get in touch, and we'll send options by email that fit them.
In a city like Strasbourg, most farewells start at home or at the family vet. Some local crematories have a viewing room, others don't, and the ones that do may be based on the edge of town or near Strasbourg. If unhurried time with your pet matters, ask the vet which crematory they use and whether a visit there is possible before you agree.
Strasbourg's population is around 280,000, the largest of the 2 Grand Est communities we cover.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in France
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and a graveside farewell will feel natural to many families here. For pets, that often means a spot in the garden or on family land, with a few words said and a stone or shrub to mark it. Check local rules, and choose somewhere you'll be able to visit.
For the France figure we rely on ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Strasbourg rather than as pet data.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Seasons change the timing of a farewell more than its shape. Many families in Strasbourg hold the goodbye indoors on the day and move the outdoor part, such as burying ashes, planting a tree or scattering on a favorite walk, to a calmer day with kinder weather. There's no deadline on ashes.

Pet farewell prices for Strasbourg families
Across Europe, a pet funeral usually means individual cremation with the ashes returned, or a grave in a pet cemetery. Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250 [5]. Cremation prices vary by country and weight; the table shows published examples to give you a feel for France.

What you can and can't do in Grand Est
Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Grand Est.
In France, your vet will usually offer individual or collective cremation; only individual returns the ashes. If your dog or cat was identified, the death should be recorded in the national I-CAD register. France also has a long pet-cemetery tradition, including the historic dog cemetery at Asnières-sur-Seine outside Paris, and many towns have a cimetière animalier nearby.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Keep your pet cool and indoors, especially in warm weather, while you make calls.
- Ask whether a viewing room or witnessed cremation is possible, and how far ahead it needs booking.
- For a pet cemetery burial, ask what the plot and grave opening cost, whether a casket or shroud is needed, and if a service at the grave is allowed that day.
- For a home burial, read up on what Grand Est allows, pick ground clear of drains and water, and have the grave ready before people get there.
- Collect a keepsake first: the tags and collar, a snip of fur, an impression of a paw.
- Confirm the price in writing before anyone collects your pet.
- Write down the date they give you for the ashes coming back; the next part of the plan hangs on it.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
Grief after losing a pet can be as heavy as other losses, and it's normal for it to last weeks or months. A quiet bench in the Orangerie or by the Ill, and friends willing to hear about your pet, can make the weeks easier. Pet loss support groups and helplines are available in French and German, both locally and online. Be patient with yourself.

Questions people ask
How do France attitudes to cremation compare?
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. We show it on the Strasbourg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [7]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Do people hold funerals for hamsters, birds and other small pets?
Plenty do. A small pet's farewell needs little more than a lined box, a few words and a flower, and children often need it more than adults expect. Choose a garden grave where local rules allow and you expect to stay, or ask a crematory about individual cremation for small animals, since the amount of ash is tiny. Mark the spot with a stone or a pot plant.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
Can I bury my pet at home in Strasbourg?
It depends on the country and often the local council. Germany allows it on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil and not in water-protection areas; Dubai doesn't permit animal burial at all; Japan bans it in public places such as parks. Ask your vet or local authority before digging, or consider a pet cemetery.
Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Strasbourg?
Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form. Once home, keep your pet cool and hold the farewell within a day, then bury them where local rules allow or call a crematory to collect. The vet can still arrange cremation later if you change your mind.
