Lyon, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
A goodbye that fits life in Lyon
Lyon is a sociable city of cafés and shared meals, but losing a pet can make home feel suddenly quiet. Talk to someone who understood the bond, such as a friend, family member or your vet, or a pet loss support service. Some people find comfort in revisiting places they loved together, like the Parc de la Tête d'Or or the banks of the Rhône.
Children in Lyon families often need clear, gentle explanations when a pet dies, without euphemisms that confuse them. Giving them a role, like choosing a photo, drawing a picture or placing flowers, helps them take part. Adults may find the grief returns on the anniversary, or around La Toussaint at the start of November, when many French families visit graves and remember the people, and animals, they have lost.
A Lyon family often has people spread across the metro, and weekday traffic makes a same-day gathering harder than it sounds. Many families split the goodbye in two: a short private farewell at home or the vet on the day, then a relaxed celebration of life a week or two later, once the ashes are home and everyone can plan to come.
With roughly 513,000 residents, Lyon is the largest of the 2 Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes communities we cover.
Our pages for Grenoble (59 miles) and Dijon (108 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Lyon as well.
44.91%[1]
In 2023, 44.91% of deaths in France led to cremation.
+$25–$100[2]
Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.
$831[3]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).
68% cremation; 32% burial[4]
In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.
Where these figures come from: CareCredit (Synchrony) and Cooney, Kogan, Brooks, Ellis.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
In communities where burial is still the norm, like France at about 44.91%[1] cremated, sitting up with the body before a funeral is a remembered custom for some families. A short version works for a pet: keep them on their bed in a cool room for an evening so relatives can drop by, then bury or hand over in the morning. In warm weather, keep it to a few hours.
For the France figure we rely on ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Lyon rather than as pet data.
Planning around heat, cold and rain in Lyon
If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Lyon, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

Pet farewell prices for Lyon families
Timing has a price in some countries. Swedish vets say ashes usually take 2-4 weeks[5] to come back, while one Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return [6]. In the Netherlands, individual cremation averages about EUR 300 [7]. Rather than paying for speed in Lyon, many families simply set the family get-together around the day the ashes arrive.
The full price table by product is on our Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you dig or scatter in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes on both.
In France, your vet will usually offer individual or collective cremation; only individual returns the ashes. If your dog or cat was identified, the death should be recorded in the national I-CAD register. France also has a long pet-cemetery tradition, including the historic dog cemetery at Asnières-sur-Seine outside Paris, and many towns have a cimetière animalier nearby.
A pet funeral within a day: how to do it
- Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. Tiny pets leave very little ash, so ask the crematory how they keep it separate and what it comes back in.
- For a garden grave, pick a spot on land you expect to keep, check the local rules, and plan a marker such as a flat stone or a pot plant.
- Invite whoever looked after them, and that can be just a parent and a child. Small creatures leave surprisingly large holes.
- Say a few words or read a note, and finish by placing a flower, or a little of the food they loved most, on the box.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, instead of all at once that afternoon, so the space empties gradually rather than in one go.
Keeping their memory alive in Lyon
A farewell for a pet in Lyon might be a candle lit at home, a few words from each person around the table, or a gathering of friends when the ashes return. Some families visit a pet cemetery together and choose a place for a plaque. If you want to spend time with your pet before cremation, or be present at collection, tell the provider when you arrange it so they can allow for it.

Questions people ask
Why does the Lyon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lyon?
Usually yes. Grenoble is about 59 miles away and Dijon is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Lyon within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Lyon?
Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes rules allow it.
Is a pet funeral common in France?
Small farewells are common almost everywhere, even if people don't call them funerals. For people, about 44.91%[1] of deaths in France end in cremation, and that shapes pet habits too: where cremation is usual, pet farewells often centre on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels more natural.
