A proper farewell for your pet in Singapore

Singapore, Central

How families in Singapore say goodbye to a pet

Many Singapore families have relatives abroad and pets that moved countries with them, which can make grief more complicated when family can't be together. A video call farewell, photos shared in a family chat or a small ceremony timed so relatives can join remotely can help. Children benefit from simple, honest explanations and a small role, like choosing a photo for the urn.

Singapore life is fast, and for many people a pet is the calm at the end of a long day in a busy flat. Losing them can leave the home feeling very quiet. Take time off if you can, share memories with people who knew your pet, and consider a pet loss support group or counselor if the sadness stays heavy for weeks.

With a long list of providers around Singapore, the risk is comparing the wrong things. Price matters, but so do three quieter questions: will your pet be cremated alone, can you spend time with them before it happens, and how will the ashes come back to you? Put the same three to two or three places and the right one usually stands out.

Singapore's population is around 5,637,000, the largest of the 5 Central communities we cover.

Families in Singapore often end up using a provider from Bukit Timah (2 miles), Orchard (3 miles) and Marina Bay (6 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

81.16%[1]

In 2023, 81.16% of deaths in Singapore were cremated (4 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

Funeral traditions in Singapore and your pet

With about 81.16%[1] of people in Singapore cremated, a cremation is the familiar end to a funeral here, and many families want a pet's farewell to echo it on a small scale. You can borrow whatever feels right: a blessing, a moment of silence, a candle, a shared meal afterwards. Whatever your family would do for a person, a smaller, simpler version usually fits a pet.

Planning an outdoor goodbye in Singapore's climate

Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Singapore: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

Pet farewell prices for Singapore families

In Singapore, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [5]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Central: Central costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you dig or scatter in Central

Renting changes what you can do. Many leases forbid digging, and a landlord can ask for anything buried to be removed. If you rent in Central, a pet cemetery, cremation, or a big garden container holding the ashes sidesteps the problem. The wider rules are below.

In Singapore, the national environment agency directs owners of dogs and cats to commercial animal crematoria, and home burial isn't practical for most families. Many providers include a short farewell or prayer session before cremation and offer columbarium niches for the ashes, from about SGD 300 [5]. Ask whether the ceremony and niche are priced separately.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If the goodbye is planned, ask your vet about a home visit and book it early; in-home vets serving Singapore can be booked up days ahead.
  2. Tell the vet what you'd like around it: time before, time after, and collection only once the family is ready.
  3. Prepare the room: your pet's bed, a blanket, soft light, phones away.
  4. Give each person, including children, one small job, whether that's picking a flower or reading a single sentence aloud.
  5. Say a few words. One memory per person is enough, and laughing is fine.
  6. Plan a second gathering around the ashes' return, so anyone who missed the first can still take part.

Keeping their memory alive in Singapore

A farewell for a pet in Singapore can start with a brief goodbye at home before collection, a small ceremony at the crematorium with the family present, or a later gathering with friends. Different families bring their own religious or cultural touches, such as prayers or incense, and that's welcome at a time of loss. Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Singapore?

For people, yes: about 81.16%[1] of Singapore deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Singapore follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Singapore?

The closest communities we cover are Bukit Timah (about 2 miles), Orchard (about 3 miles) and Marina Bay (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Singapore too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How soon should a pet funeral happen?

There's no fixed rule. Many families hold a short farewell on the day, before collection or burial, and a larger gathering later when the ashes come home. If people need time to travel, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in a cold room and book a viewing there when everyone arrives.

How much does a pet funeral cost in Singapore?

It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.

What do you say at a pet's funeral?

Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
