Planning a goodbye for your pet in Orchard

Orchard, Central

Pet farewells in Orchard: the local picture

Many people living around Orchard are expatriates, posted to Singapore for a few years and far from parents and old friends, so losing a pet here can feel very isolating. Counsellors and pet loss groups in Singapore understand this, and a video call home to share photos helps many people. Children generally cope better with a plain explanation and some part in choosing a memorial.

Singapore is a multicultural city, and customs around death vary widely among Chinese, Malay, Indian and expatriate families. A Buddhist or Taoist prayer, a Christian blessing, incense, flowers or a quiet moment at home can all feel right. Some aftercare providers in Singapore can make room for simple rites, so ask what is possible. Some families choose to mark the seventh day or other traditional days of remembrance as well.

In-home vets are fewer around smaller places like Orchard, and one may cover a wide area, so a home goodbye often needs booking several days ahead. If timing is uncertain, ask your usual clinic whether they'd visit in an emergency, or whether they have a side room with its own door so you can avoid the waiting room.

About 10,000 people live in Orchard, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 5 Central communities we cover. Singapore, roughly 3 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Orchard run from there.

Families in Orchard often end up using a provider from Marina Bay (3 miles), Singapore (3 miles, a larger centre) and Sentosa (4 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

81.16%[1]

In 2023, 81.16% of deaths in Singapore were cremated (4 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest

About 81.16%[1] of people in Singapore are cremated, so most families here have been to a cremation service and know how one feels. That familiarity carries over to pets: a viewing before cremation, a few words said and ashes brought home is a pattern people recognise. It also means crematories are well established, and a farewell room or witnessed cremation is easier to find.

For the Singapore figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Orchard rather than as pet data.

Planning an outdoor goodbye in Orchard's climate

Local weather affects two things about a pet funeral: how long a home goodbye can last, and whether an outdoor burial, planting or scattering is practical this week. Providers in Orchard know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest now, and whether a viewing room is available if the weather is poor.

Where the money goes in an Orchard pet funeral

Public and private options can differ hugely. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward collects pets under 25 kg for a JPY 3,000 fee with communal cremation and no ashes returned [5]; a private communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times that, by our estimate [6]. In one Japanese survey, about 30% of owners felt a funeral would help them avoid regret [7].

What you can and can't do in Central

A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Central for burying at home and scattering ashes.

In Singapore, the national environment agency directs owners of dogs and cats to commercial animal crematoria, and home burial isn't practical for most families. Many providers include a short farewell or prayer session before cremation and offer columbarium niches for the ashes, from about SGD 300 [9]. Ask whether the ceremony and niche are priced separately.

From first call to farewell: the steps

  1. Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, then arrange the vet's visit to the house and agree what happens afterwards, all in one call.
  2. Fill the days before with small favorites: an unhurried walk, a sunny spot on the floor, the food they're normally not allowed.
  3. Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Staying and stepping out are equally loving, and no one should be pushed either way.
  4. Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
  5. When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
  6. Walk out to the car or van with your pet if you'd like to. Many teams use a stretcher or basket and will let you help carry.

The weeks and months after the goodbye

In a high-rise apartment, the loss of a pet can make the home feel very quiet, and the familiar sounds and routines are suddenly gone. Grief often returns in those moments. That is normal. Some families mark the loss by keeping a photo by the window or lighting a candle on the anniversary. A small shelf with a photo and a favourite toy can become a quiet corner in the flat.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Orchard?

Usually yes. Marina Bay is about 3 miles away, Singapore is about 3 miles away and Sentosa is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Where are the providers that serve Orchard actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Singapore, about 3 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Orchard and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is cremation common in Singapore?

For people, yes: about 81.16%[1] of Singapore deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Orchard follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?

Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.

Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Orchard?

Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form. Once home, keep your pet cool and hold the farewell within a day, then bury them where local rules allow or call a crematory to collect. The vet can still arrange cremation later if you change your mind.

Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Orchard?

Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Singapore, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
