Pet Funerals in New Zealand: what to know

Families who have moved to New Zealand from elsewhere often find the local pet funeral customs unfamiliar: different names for services, different burial rules, different ways of returning ashes. If you might move again, keep the ashes in a sealed, labelled urn with the cremation certificate; travelling with them later is far simpler.

Whether you live in one of the big cities, such as Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, or somewhere much smaller, a pet farewell in New Zealand comes down to three decisions: where it happens, who's there and what happens afterwards. This page explains how each works here, with real published prices and the local rules.

We cover 4 communities in New Zealand, from Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington to smaller towns.

Our estimate

595,000

Estimated pet-owning households across the communities we cover in New Zealand

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 4 communities in New Zealand on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Local customs and your pet's farewell

Some pet cemeteries also run a crematory, which suits New Zealand, with cremation at roughly 69%[1] and burial still common. If there's one near you, you can see a grave site and ask about cremation in the same visit, then decide with both options in front of you rather than on the phone.

The cremation figure for New Zealand comes from The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in New Zealand

Size moves the price more than anything else. In Australia, the median listed individual cremation for a 40–60 kg dog is AUD 624 [2], compared with AUD 412 for pets up to 5 kg [3]. A farewell at home before collection adds little, so for a large dog it's worth spending the effort on comparing cremation quotes around New Zealand rather than trimming the goodbye.

In Australia, a survey of listed prices puts the median individual cremation at about AUD 412 median[3] for small pets and AUD 480 median[4] for a 20–30 kg dog. RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages start from AUD 250; within 14 days[5], which gives families a known date to plan a small farewell around. Viewing rooms and ceremonies are priced by each provider.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in New Zealand

Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than New Zealand as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.

In New Zealand, councils set the rules on home burial, and many urban sections are too small for it. If relatives elsewhere want some ashes for their own farewell, note that NZ Post doesn't accept human or animal ashes in its mail or parcel network, so plan to hand them over in person or ask the crematorium about other arrangements.

A simple plan for the hours ahead

  1. Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
  2. Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. Ask the clinic to keep your pet in their cold room for a day while you think.
  3. Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
  4. Request a paw print or a clipping of fur while your pet is still in the room; once they've gone it's far harder to organize.
  5. If family couldn't get there in time, ask whether they can visit the clinic to say goodbye before the collection.
  6. Get the aftercare price on its own line, separate from the medical bill, so you can see what the farewell part costs.
  7. Pencil in a gathering for later, for when the ashes are back or at the graveside, for the people who missed the day.

Marking the loss, now and later

If you choose a cemetery grave, ask how upkeep is paid before you sign. At one long-established US pet cemetery, a one-time perpetual care fee equals ~33 years[9] of its annual maintenance charge, by our estimate. Yearly fees keep your options open; a one-off payment means nobody has to remember a bill in twenty years.

Questions people ask

Where can I find a pet cemetery in New Zealand?

Pet cemeteries are most common around the larger cities in New Zealand, and some human cemeteries now have pet sections. Ask your vet, check your city page on this site or send us a note. When you call a cemetery, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.

Do I need a permit to hold a pet funeral in New Zealand?

Not for the farewell itself. Gathering at home, saying a few words and holding a small ceremony need no permission anywhere in New Zealand. Permits come into it for what happens next: burial on someone else's land, scattering in parks, on beaches or on water, and any use of a public space for a larger gathering. When in doubt, ask the landowner or the local council first.

Can I bury my pet at home in New Zealand?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.

Is a pet funeral usual in New Zealand?

Small farewells are common almost everywhere. For people, about 69%[1] of deaths in New Zealand end in cremation, and pet habits tend to follow: where cremation is usual, the farewell often centres on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels natural.

How many communities do you cover in New Zealand?

We have local pet funeral guides for 4 communities in New Zealand, including Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. Each page covers local weather and timing for outdoor farewells, typical costs, burial and scattering rules and how to plan a goodbye within a day.

How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in New Zealand?

Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [10], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [11]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.
