Pet farewells in Christchurch: the local picture
Losing a pet can hit especially hard for anyone who came through the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes with that animal at their side, and grief can stir up memories of other losses from that time. That is normal. Pet loss support lines, online groups and your vet can all help. Some people find comfort under the old trees of Hagley Park or on the Port Hills tracks, in places their pet knew.
Many Christchurch children grow up with pets in houses with big backyards, and losing one may be their first real encounter with death. Clear words help more than vague ones. Giving them a practical part, such as digging the hole for a memorial kōwhai or choosing the photo for the fridge, makes the goodbye something they did, not something that happened around them.
In a city like Christchurch, most farewells start at home or at the family vet. Some local crematories have a viewing room, others don't, and the ones that do may be based on the edge of town or near Christchurch. If unhurried time with your pet matters, ask the vet which crematory they use and whether a visit there is possible before you agree.
Christchurch's population is around 383,000.
Our estimate
100,000
Christchurch: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
383,000 ÷ 2.7 = 141,852 households; × 31% (dog) + 40% (cat) = 100,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
8,550
dog and cat deaths per year in Christchurch, our estimate
How we calculated this
100,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 8,550 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
31%[1]
31% of New Zealand households have a dog, down from 34% in 2020.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
40%[3]
40% of New Zealand households have a cat - cats are NZ's most popular pet.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in New Zealand
In New Zealand, about 69%[5] of people are cremated, a share that has been climbing. Pet farewells are changing in the same way. More families now hold a small ceremony at home or in a crematory's farewell room, and fewer dig a grave in the yard, especially in suburbs where lots are small or rented.
The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023) is where the New Zealand figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Christchurch tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How the seasons in Christchurch affect the day
If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Christchurch, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Christchurch
Size moves the price more than anything else. In Australia, the median listed individual cremation for a 40–60 kg dog is AUD 624 [6], compared with AUD 412 for pets up to 5 kg [7]. A farewell at home before collection adds little, so for a large dog it's worth spending the effort on comparing cremation quotes around Christchurch rather than trimming the goodbye.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Canterbury: Canterbury costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What you can and can't do in Canterbury
Beaches, rivers and lakes often have their own scattering rules, set by a different authority from parks, and some ask you to scatter a set distance from shore. Here's the general picture for Canterbury; for the exact spot, check with whoever manages that land or water.
In New Zealand, councils set the rules on home burial, and many urban sections are too small for it. If relatives elsewhere want some ashes for their own farewell, note that NZ Post doesn't accept human or animal ashes in its mail or parcel network, so plan to hand them over in person or ask the crematorium about other arrangements.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. A very small animal produces only a trace of ash; ask the crematory how it's kept apart from other pets' and what container it's returned in.
- For a garden grave, pick a spot on land you expect to keep, check the local rules, and plan a marker such as a flat stone or a pot plant.
- Invite whoever looked after them, and that can be just a parent and a child. Small creatures leave surprisingly large holes.
- Say a few words or read a note, and finish by placing a flower, or a little of the food they loved most, on the box.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, instead of all at once that afternoon, so the space empties gradually rather than in one go.
Remembering your pet in Christchurch
Christchurch has a strong community spirit, built partly through the earthquakes and the long rebuild that followed, and a pet's farewell often shows it. Neighbours drop by, friends bring a meal, and family gather in the garden for a few words. Many providers are happy for you to spend time with your pet before cremation, or to be there during it, if you mention it early on.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in New Zealand?
For people, yes: about 69%[5] of New Zealand deaths end in cremation, according to The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Christchurch follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is Christchurch big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 100,000 Christchurch households keep a dog or cat and around 8,550 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 383,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?
Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Christchurch?
Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Christchurch, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Christchurch?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
