Pet Funerals in the United States

Pet Funerals in the United States: what to know

In the United States, most families arrange their pet's aftercare through the vet, who works with one or more crematories. You can almost always contact a crematory or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room, an attended cremation or a graveside service before anything is booked.

Families across the United States are holding more considered goodbyes for their pets than a generation ago, from viewings before cremation to online memorials for relatives abroad. Use this page for the national picture, then open your city for local detail, or tell us what you're planning and we'll email options.

We cover 2458 communities in the United States, from New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across the United States: summer highs reach about 107°F in Phoenix, while winter lows average -11°F in Fairbanks. In 51% of the the United States communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 2458 communities in the United States on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

A pet and its family in the United States

How the United States thinks about funerals and cremation

In a place where roughly 55.7%[1] of people are cremated, families follow a mix of faiths, some of which prefer burial for people. Many traditions say little about animals' remains, so a pet's farewell is usually a family choice. If it matters to you, a quick word with your faith leader before the vet visit saves second thoughts later.

We take the the United States percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

What a pet funeral costs in the United States

If you'd like the goodbye to happen at home, the vet's visit is often the biggest single cost: at-home dog euthanasia averages about $410[2] nationally, against $139[3] in a clinic. Add cremation or burial, then whatever you choose for the farewell itself. Prices in the United States will sit around these national figures, higher in costlier areas.

If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [4]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[5] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near the United States for a cremains plot price too.

What you can and can't do in the United States

Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than the United States as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.

Planning a farewell in the United States, step by step

  1. Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: say the pet's name and that they died, rather than 'went to sleep' or 'went away'.
  2. Let them choose whether to see their pet ahead of the burial or pickup. Some children find that looking answers things they couldn't have asked out loud.
  3. Offer choices rather than jobs: which blanket, how to decorate the box, or whether to draw a card that goes with their pet.
  4. Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes and let them say something, or nothing, without anyone correcting them.
  5. Expect questions later, often at bedtime, and answer them honestly and briefly.
  6. Let their teacher or childminder know, which means a withdrawn or tearful child makes sense to the grown-ups at school.

Keeping their memory alive in the United States

Children often want to keep doing something after the farewell. A memory box with the collar, a drawing and a photo, or a jar of notes written on the anniversary, gives them a way back to the feelings when they need it. Let them decide what goes in.

Questions people ask

What does a witnessed pet cremation cost in the United States?

It's usually a surcharge on a private cremation. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing typically adds $25 to $100 [7], and posted surcharges we found range from $25 to $350. Providers around the larger cities of the United States are the likeliest to offer it; ask for the total in writing.

How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in the United States?

Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [14], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [15]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.

How much does a pet funeral cost in the United States?

The farewell itself can cost almost nothing if it's held at home. The main costs are cremation or burial, plus any viewing, witnessed cremation or headstone. Big-city providers and cemeteries usually charge more; rural areas may add mileage. Ask any provider in the United States for a written, itemized total before you agree.

Can I bury my pet at home in the United States?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.

How many communities do you cover in the United States?

We have local pet funeral guides for 2458 communities in the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. Each page covers local weather and timing for outdoor farewells, typical costs, burial and scattering rules and how to plan a goodbye within a day.

Can children be part of a pet's farewell in the United States?

Yes, and most families find it helps. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower or drawing a picture to go with the pet, use plain words like 'died', keep it short and let them step out whenever they want. Our blog has age-by-age ideas.
