Pet Funerals in Florida: what to know
The first call to a provider anywhere in Florida is easier with four facts ready: your pet's weight, where they are now, whether you want the ashes back and whether anyone wants to be present. With those, a crematory or cemetery can give you a real price and a time. They're also what our request form asks for.
In the larger places across Florida, such as Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa, families usually have a choice of crematories, in-home vets and at least one pet cemetery within reach. In smaller towns, the goodbye tends to happen at home or on family land, and the cremation itself takes place in a regional centre, which can mean a drive if you want to be present.
We cover 235 communities in Florida, from Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Florida: summer highs reach about 94°F in Cape Coral, while winter lows average 41°F in Tallahassee. In 0% of the Florida communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How Florida thinks about funerals and cremation
Scattering is common where cremation is the norm, and with about 72.5%[1] of people in Florida cremated, some families want a pet's ashes to end up beside a person's. Rules on mixing remains in human cemeteries vary a lot, so ask first. The reverse happens too: about 800 people's ashes rest alongside their pets at one historic US pet cemetery [2].
Source for the Florida figure: NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.
Where the money goes in a Florida pet funeral
If you'd like the goodbye to happen at home, the vet's visit is often the biggest single cost: at-home dog euthanasia averages about $410[3] nationally, against $139[4] in a clinic. Add cremation or burial, then whatever you choose for the farewell itself. Prices in Florida will sit around these national figures, higher in costlier areas.
For a burial with all the trimmings, a full pet funeral-home package with viewing, memorial service, casket and burial is estimated at $700–$1,000[5]. A review of 15 US pet cemeteries puts a typical pet burial at $1,500–$2,000[6], though starting prices vary widely. Families in Florida can keep a graveside ceremony for less by burying ashes rather than a body.
| Part of the farewell | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vet visit for a goodbye at home (dog) | $410[3] | In-clinic average is $139[4] |
| Private dog cremation, ashes returned | $260[7] | Cats usually cost less |
| Viewing or witnessing the cremation | +$25–$100[8] | Posted surcharges run up to $350; median about $125 [9] |
| Pet cemetery burial (dog, average) | $831[10] | Plot, opening and closing the grave |
| Typical pet burial, 15 US cemeteries | $1,500–$2,000[6] | Starting prices vary from under $100 to thousands |
| Pet funeral-home burial package | $700–$1,000[5] | Viewing, service, casket, burial and director |
| Flat granite grave marker | from $157.95[11] | Upright headstones cost more |
| Full burial at a historic pet cemetery | about USD 7,000[12] | Hartsdale, New York: plot, container, headstone and care |
| Home ceremony, candles, flowers | Little or nothing | Often the most personal option |

Local rules worth checking in Florida
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Florida as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Florida local government directory.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, settle them onto a towel or their own bed somewhere cool. There is no decision you need to make within the hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. Everything else, the timing of the goodbye included, follows from this single decision.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to reserve a slot, and find out if they can hold your pet in cold storage in the meantime.
- Send one short message giving the place and time to the handful of people you want present.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
- Hold the farewell, and afterwards either bury your pet or pass them over to whoever is collecting.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
If you choose a cemetery grave, ask how upkeep is paid before you sign. At one long-established US pet cemetery, a one-time perpetual care fee equals ~33 years[14] of its annual maintenance charge, by our estimate. Yearly fees keep your options open; a one-off payment means nobody has to remember a bill in twenty years.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in Florida?
We have local pet funeral guides for 235 communities in Florida, including Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa. Each page covers local weather and timing for outdoor farewells, typical costs, burial and scattering rules and how to plan a goodbye within a day.
Can I bury my pet at home in Florida?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.
How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in Florida?
Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [15], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [16]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.
How do we plan an outdoor farewell in the Florida heat?
Hold it early in the morning or after sunset, with shade and water for older relatives, and keep your pet indoors and cool until the last moment. In hot places such as Cape Coral, where summer highs average about 94°F, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet if people need time to arrive.
Do I need a permit to hold a pet funeral in Florida?
Not for the farewell itself. Gathering at home, saying a few words and holding a small ceremony need no permission anywhere in Florida. Permits come into it for what happens next: burial on someone else's land, scattering in parks, on beaches or on water, and any use of a public space for a larger gathering. When in doubt, ask the landowner or the local council first.
Is a pet funeral usual in Florida?
Small farewells are common almost everywhere. For people, about 72.5%[1] of deaths in Florida end in cremation, and pet habits tend to follow: where cremation is usual, the farewell often centres on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels natural.
