How Florida thinks about funerals and cremation
Cremation is the usual choice for people in Florida, at about 72.5%[5]. For pets, that often means the funeral is a gathering around the ashes rather than a burial: a celebration of life at home, a scattering on a favorite walk or a small planting in the garden. None of those needs a venue, and all of them can happen weeks later, when everyone is ready.

When the weather shapes the goodbye
By July, garden soil around Christmas can bake as hard as brick. If you're planning a home burial, soak the spot with a hose the evening before, dig at first light and lay a board over the hole if you need to pause. Two people make lighter work of it, and nobody grieving should be digging at noon.
Warm weather brings flies, which can upset children at an outdoor goodbye. Wrap your pet in a light cotton sheet with only the face showing, keep the outdoor part in deep shade and keep it short. During Christmas's June, July, August and September, many families simply move the ceremony indoors, with the curtains drawn and a fan running.

Planning a farewell in Christmas, step by step
- Take a breath. If your pet has died at home, lay them on their bed or a towel in a cool room. Nothing has to happen in the next hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. That one choice sets the clock for everything else, including when the farewell can happen.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to hold a time, and ask whether they can keep your pet cool until then.
- Send one short message to the few people who should be there, with the time and place.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
- Hold the farewell, then hand your pet to the collection team or lay them to rest.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.
Keeping their memory alive in Christmas
Children in Christmas may have grown up around cattle, horses and barn cats, yet the death of their own companion still feels new. Give them a part to play, such as picking the photo for a frame, drawing a card for the family, or helping set a plant in the ground.
