A proper farewell for your pet in Hollywood

Hollywood, Florida

Pet farewells in Hollywood: the local picture

A pet farewell in Hollywood can be a quiet goodbye at home, a sunrise visit to the beach, or a small gathering of family and friends when the ashes come back. If relatives live out of state, a video call can include them. Tell us what matters to you, and we'll email options from providers who serve Broward County and the surrounding area.

Many Hollywood residents are retirees or people who moved to Florida from somewhere else, and for them a pet can be the closest daily companion. Losing that companion can leave a big gap, especially in a quiet condo. Missing them that much is a normal part of grief. Getting out to the Broadwalk, talking with a neighbour who knew your pet, or calling family can all help.

A mid-size place like Hollywood usually has one or two crematories and a handful of in-home vets, so availability can tighten on weekends and holidays. If your pet is very ill, it's kinder to yourself to ask now what a home goodbye would involve, who would collect afterwards and whether a viewing is possible, so the day itself holds fewer decisions.

With roughly 157,019 residents, Hollywood is the 12th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 13 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hollywood run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Hallandale Beach (2 miles), Dania Beach (3 miles) and Aventura (4 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

58,000

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Hollywood

How we calculated this

157,019 ÷ 2.5 = 62,808 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 58,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

4,800

Hollywood families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

58,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,800 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Hollywood

What local burial and cremation customs suggest

About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, so most families here have been to a cremation service and know how one feels. That familiarity carries over to pets: a viewing before cremation, a few words said and ashes brought home is a pattern people recognise. It also means crematories are well established, and a farewell room or witnessed cremation is easier to find.

Hollywood weather and your pet's farewell

Driving your pet to the vet or crematory in May, June, July, August, September and October takes a little planning. Cool the car before you carry your pet out, lay them on a towel in the footwell or cargo area away from the windows, and go straight there. With highs near 91°F in Hollywood, a parked car heats up within minutes, so skip any stops on the way.

Candles, flowers and printed photos all suffer in Hollywood's summer heat, with highs near 91°F. For an outdoor ceremony, use battery candles or lanterns, keep flowers in water until the last minute and print photos on card rather than paper. Small practical choices like these keep the farewell calm instead of frantic.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Hollywood

Ask every provider in Hollywood to split the quote in two: body care (collection, cremation or burial, the container) and the farewell (viewing time, witnessed cremation, a graveside service). Seeing the two numbers apart makes it easy to drop what you don't need. The national figures below show what's typical.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Florida

Renting changes what you can do. Many leases forbid digging, and a landlord can ask for anything buried to be removed. If you rent in Florida, a pet cemetery, cremation, or a big garden container holding the ashes sidesteps the problem. The wider rules are below.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Hollywood or your HOA adds anything.

A pet funeral within a day: how to do it

  1. Check gently that your pet has died: no breathing, no heartbeat against the chest, eyes open and still. If you're not sure, ring an emergency vet.
  2. Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly into a sleeping shape within the first couple of hours, before the body stiffens.
  3. Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bowel and bladder often release on their own. This is expected and isn't a sign that something was wrong.
  4. Let your other animals come and sniff if they want to. Many owners feel it helps the pets left behind understand the empty bed.
  5. If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
  6. Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so that the last thing you remember is your own farewell and not an unfamiliar face at the door.

The weeks and months after the goodbye

If grief doesn't ease after a few weeks, pet loss support groups and helplines, including online groups and some in Spanish, can help. Your vet may know of local options in South Florida. Many communities and senior centres also offer grief support. Marking the anniversary, perhaps with a walk on the beach or a donation to an animal rescue, can help the memory feel settled.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 13 miles from Hollywood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Hollywood page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Does the Hollywood climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Hollywood?

The closest communities we cover are Hallandale Beach (about 2 miles), Dania Beach (about 3 miles) and Aventura (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hollywood too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?

Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [7]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.

Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Hollywood?

Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form. Once home, keep your pet cool and hold the farewell within a day, then bury them where local rules allow or call a crematory to collect. The vet can still arrange cremation later if you change your mind.
