A proper farewell for your pet in Key West

Key West, Florida

A goodbye that fits life in Key West

Some Key West families say goodbye at sunset, on a quiet stretch of shore or out on the water, sharing a memory as the light fades. Others gather friends on the porch with photos and a drink. Children can choose a shell or a painted stone to keep with the urn. On an island this small, a farewell often draws more neighbors than you'd expect.

In-person pet-loss groups are thin on the ground in the Keys, so many residents turn to online communities, phone support lines and video counseling with therapists on the mainland. Local animal hospitals sometimes know of informal groups too. If the grief doesn't lift after a few weeks, or it's mixing with other losses, it's worth talking to a professional about it.

In Key West, the church hall, the community centre or a friendly café may be the natural place to gather after a pet's farewell, especially if half the town knew your dog from walks down the main street. A tea urn, a table of photos and an hour on a weekday afternoon is often all it takes.

With roughly 24,999 residents, Key West is the 103rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Homestead (105 miles, a larger centre), Naples (110 miles) and Cutler Bay (115 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

9,200

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Key West

How we calculated this

24,999 ÷ 2.5 = 10,000 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,200. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

770

Key West families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

What local burial and cremation customs suggest

In Florida, where about 72.5%[5] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.

That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Key West only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Planning around heat, cold and rain in Key West

By August, garden soil around Key West can bake as hard as brick. If you're planning a home burial, soak the spot with a hose the evening before, dig at first light and lay a board over the hole if you need to pause. Two people make lighter work of it, and nobody grieving should be digging at noon.

Key West summers are hot, with August highs around 91°F. Heat changes how long a home farewell can wait. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor, run the air conditioning and hold the goodbye within a few hours. Ask for collection straight afterwards.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Key West

Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Key West crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.

Permissions to check in Florida before the ceremony

Renting changes what you can do. Many leases forbid digging, and a landlord can ask for anything buried to be removed. If you rent in Florida, a pet cemetery, cremation, or a big garden container holding the ashes sidesteps the problem. The wider rules are below.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Key West may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

A simple plan for the hours ahead

  1. Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: say the pet's name and that they died, rather than 'went to sleep' or 'went away'.
  2. Let them choose whether to see their pet ahead of the burial or pickup. Some children find that looking answers things they couldn't have asked out loud.
  3. Offer choices rather than jobs: which blanket, how to decorate the box, or whether to draw a card that goes with their pet.
  4. Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes and let them say something, or nothing, without anyone correcting them.
  5. Expect questions later, often at bedtime, then give short, truthful answers when they come.
  6. Let their teacher or childminder know, which means a withdrawn or tearful child makes sense to the grown-ups at school.

The weeks and months after the goodbye

Key West is a small island where people notice when a familiar face disappears from a porch, a shop doorway or a bicycle basket. The island's many animal lovers can be a real comfort early on. If you'd rather not travel for euthanasia, check whether your vet can come to the house; a pet at peace in its own room is often easier on everyone.

Questions people ask

How does Key West's weather affect pet aftercare?

August is the hottest month in Key West, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Key West?

The closest communities we cover are Homestead (about 105 miles), Naples (about 110 miles) and Cutler Bay (about 115 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Key West too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Florida?

For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Key West follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Roughly how many pets die in Key West each year?

Our estimate is around 770. It comes from Key West's population (about 24,999), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,200 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Can we plan a pet funeral in Key West within a day?

Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.

Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?

Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
