Cocoa, Florida
A goodbye that fits life in Cocoa
For children in Cocoa, the loss of a pet may be their first brush with death. Keep words simple and true, answer questions as they come, and let them contribute to the goodbye, such as choosing a photo for the frame or painting a stone for the garden. Teachers and counselors in Brevard schools are there for a child who has a hard time afterward.
Cocoa has a mix of long-time Brevard families, retirees and people who came for work at the Cape, and a pet's death touches all of them differently. A quiet farewell at home, in the yard or on the porch, gives a household time to say goodbye before collection. Some families gather later by the lagoon, perhaps timing it with an evening launch the pet used to watch with them.
Neighbours in a place like Cocoa often offer to help, and it's fine to say yes. Someone with a small digger or a strong back can prepare a grave, a friend can mind the children for an hour, and someone else can bring supper so nobody has to cook that night. Accepting help is part of how small communities mark a loss.
Cocoa is home to about 19,777 people, the 124th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Cocoa are based about 40 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Rockledge (5 miles), Merritt Island (7 miles) and Cape Canaveral (8 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
7,300
Cocoa: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
19,777 ÷ 2.5 = 7,911 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,300. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
610
Cocoa families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
7,300 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 610 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Florida
Human crematoria in Florida, where roughly 72.5%[5] of deaths end in cremation, tend to have gardens of remembrance with benches and small plaques. Some pet crematories copy the idea with a memorial wall or garden where families can scatter ashes or add a name. Ask whether there's one and what a plaque costs; it gives the family somewhere to go on the anniversary.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Cocoa only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Cocoa summers are hot, with July highs around 90°F. Heat changes how long a home farewell can wait. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor, run the air conditioning and hold the goodbye within a few hours. Ask for collection straight afterwards.
Heat and ashes go together better than heat and burial. Many Cocoa families cremate in summer and hold the burial or scattering of ashes in a cooler month, when a morning in the garden or the park is pleasant rather than punishing. There's no time limit on ashes, so choose a date for comfort, not urgency.

Pet farewell prices for Cocoa families
Pet cemetery burial costs about three times a private cremation in the US, by our estimate (3.2x[6]), because a plot, opening the grave and long-term care are all involved. That's why many families in Cocoa choose cremation followed by a small burial of the ashes, which keeps the graveside ceremony at a fraction of the price.
The full price table by product is on our Florida page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Florida
Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Florida.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Cocoa's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, even if the decision was made in a rush. You don't have to leave straight away.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. Ask the clinic to keep your pet in their cold room for a day while you think.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, separate from the medical bill, so you can see what the farewell part costs.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
Remembering your pet in Cocoa
Shift work at the Cape and the base can mean a pet dies while one partner is on duty or away. That can leave both people feeling they missed something. It is fine to hold a second, fuller farewell later when everyone is home. National pet loss lines and online groups are free, and your Brevard clinic may know a grief counselor nearby.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 40 miles from Cocoa) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is Cocoa big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,300 Cocoa households keep a dog or cat and around 610 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 19,777), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Cocoa?
The closest communities we cover are Rockledge (about 5 miles), Merritt Island (about 7 miles) and Cape Canaveral (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Cocoa too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Cocoa follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Cocoa?
Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Florida rules allow it.
How soon should a pet funeral happen?
There's no fixed rule. Many families hold a short farewell on the day, before collection or burial, and a larger gathering later when the ashes come home. If people need time to travel, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in a cold room and book a viewing there when everyone arrives.
