Pet Funerals in Missouri: what to know
A pet farewell looks much the same anywhere in Missouri: a place, a few people, a few words, then cremation or burial. What changes from one community to the next is everything around it: whether there's a crematory with a farewell room nearby, whether a pet cemetery is within driving distance, and what the local rules say about burying in the garden.
Most families in Missouri never think about a pet funeral until the day it's needed, and that's fine: a meaningful farewell can be planned within a day. This page gives you the regional picture, including costs, burial and scattering rules and how to include children. Each city page below adds local weather and nearby options.
We cover 43 communities in Missouri, from Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Missouri: summer highs reach about 90°F in Kansas City, while winter lows average 17°F in St. Joseph. In 100% of the Missouri communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How Missouri thinks about funerals and cremation
About 59.8%[1] of people in Missouri are cremated, so local faith communities are used to both burial and cremation. If you'd like a blessing for your pet, many clergy will say one at home or by a grave, and there's no set form. A short prayer, a reading or a moment of silence before the collection or the burial is plenty.
We take the Missouri percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What a pet funeral costs in Missouri
If you'd like the goodbye to happen at home, the vet's visit is often the biggest single cost: at-home dog euthanasia averages about $410[2] nationally, against $139[3] in a clinic. Add cremation or burial, then whatever you choose for the farewell itself. Prices in Missouri will sit around these national figures, higher in costlier areas.
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [4], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [5]. Ask Missouri crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.
| Part of the farewell | Typical cost | Notes |

| Home ceremony, candles, flowers | Little or nothing | Often the most personal option |

What you can and can't do in Missouri
Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Missouri and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Missouri local government directory.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If the goodbye is planned, ask whether your vet does house calls and reserve one as soon as you can; home-visit vets around Missouri often have no free slots for several days.
- Tell the vet what you'd like around it: time before, time after, and collection only once the family is ready.
- Prepare the room: dim lights, phones out of sight, a blanket, the bed they know.
- Give each person, including children, one small job, whether that's picking a flower or reading a single sentence aloud.
- Say a few words. One memory per person is enough, and laughing is fine.
- Plan a second gathering for when the ashes come home, if more people want to be there.
Marking the loss, now and later
The first year brings dates that catch people off guard: your pet's birthday, the first holiday without them, the anniversary of the last vet visit. Put them in the calendar now with something small attached, such as a walk or a candle. If you'd like a lasting marker, our memorial stone planner helps you work out wording, size and cost.

Questions people ask
Can I bury my pet at home in Missouri?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.
Can children be part of a pet's farewell in Missouri?
Yes, and most families find it helps. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower or drawing a picture to go with the pet, use plain words like 'died', keep it short and let them step out whenever they want. Our blog has age-by-age ideas.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Missouri?
Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land have their own rules, and many ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter low and downwind, away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
What usually happens at a pet funeral in Missouri?
Most follow a loose shape: family gathers around the pet at home, at the clinic or in a farewell room at the crematory; someone says a few words; each person has a moment to say goodbye; then the pet is collected, cremated or buried. Many add one ritual, such as a candle, a flower or a letter. The whole thing often takes less than an hour.
How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in Missouri?
Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [13], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [14]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.
What does a witnessed pet cremation cost in Missouri?
It's usually a surcharge on a private cremation. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing typically adds $25 to $100 [4], and posted surcharges we found range from $25 to $350. Providers around the larger cities of Missouri are the likeliest to offer it; ask for the total in writing.
