Pet Funerals in India: what to know

In India, most families arrange their pet's aftercare through the vet, who works with one or more crematories. You can almost always contact a crematory or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room, an attended cremation or a graveside service before anything is booked.

Families across India are holding more considered goodbyes for their pets than a generation ago, from viewings before cremation to online memorials for relatives abroad. Use this page for the national picture, then open your city for local detail, or tell us what you're planning and we'll email options.

We cover 3 communities in India, from Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in India

With cremation the choice for roughly 80%[1] of people in India, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.

The cremation figure for India comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Budgeting for a farewell in India

Package names vary a lot across Asia, and a 'communal' package may exclude the farewell ceremony entirely. Before comparing prices in India, ask three things: is my pet cremated alone, are the ashes returned, and is there time for a ceremony or prayers beforehand? The table shows published examples from the region.

In India, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [2]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.

What you can and can't do in India

Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which India and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.

In India, dedicated pet cremation services are growing in the larger cities, and some operators offer Hindu rituals performed by a priest as part of the farewell. Customs differ by faith and family, so say what you'd like on the first call, whether that's prayers, flowers or simply time together.

Planning a farewell in India, step by step

  1. Check gently that your pet has died: no breathing, no heartbeat against the chest, eyes open and still. If you're not sure, ring an emergency vet.
  2. Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly so your pet looks asleep; do this inside the first two hours or so, while the body is still supple.
  3. Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for the bladder or bowel to empty after death, and it doesn't mean anything went wrong.
  4. Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
  5. If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
  6. Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so that the last thing you remember is your own farewell and not an unfamiliar face at the door.

Remembering your pet in India

If you choose a cemetery grave, ask how upkeep is paid before you sign. At one long-established US pet cemetery, a one-time perpetual care fee equals ~33 years[7] of its annual maintenance charge, by our estimate. Yearly fees keep your options open; a one-off payment means nobody has to remember a bill in twenty years.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can I be present at my pet's cremation in India?

Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of India, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.

What does a pet funeral cost in India compared with the US?

Prices differ by country and currency, but the pattern is the same: individual cremation costs more than communal, a cemetery grave more than cremation, and a farewell room or attended service adds to either. Published examples for India are in the table above; ask local providers for a written quote.

Can I bury my pet at home in India?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.

Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in India?

Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land have their own rules, and many ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter low and downwind, away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.

Do I need a permit to hold a pet funeral in India?

Not for the farewell itself. Gathering at home, saying a few words and holding a small ceremony need no permission anywhere in India. Permits come into it for what happens next: burial on someone else's land, scattering in parks, on beaches or on water, and any use of a public space for a larger gathering. When in doubt, ask the landowner or the local council first.

Can children be part of a pet's farewell in India?

Yes, and most families find it helps. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower or drawing a picture to go with the pet, use plain words like 'died', keep it short and let them step out whenever they want. Our blog has age-by-age ideas.
