A goodbye that fits life in Mumbai
In a crowded housing society, a pet is often known to everyone: the watchman, the neighbors, the children in the compound. Losing that animal is felt widely. A short farewell before cremation, at home or with the provider, gives your family a moment together. Ask whether you can be present or spend some quiet time with your pet first, and let children say goodbye in their own way.
Grief for a pet comes in waves, and in a small flat reminders are everywhere. Some families mark a pet's death with a prayer or ritual on a particular day; others prefer something quiet and personal. Both are normal. Children cope better when told honestly and included in something small, like choosing a photo to keep beside the ashes or lighting the lamp.
A Mumbai family often has people spread across the metro, and weekday traffic makes a same-day gathering harder than it sounds. Many families split the goodbye in two: a short private farewell at home or the vet on the day, then a relaxed celebration of life a week or two later, once the ashes are home and everyone can plan to come.
With roughly 12,478,000 residents, Mumbai is one of the Maharashtra communities we cover.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
With about 80%[1] of people in India cremated, a cremation is the familiar end to a funeral here, and many families want a pet's farewell to echo it on a small scale. You can borrow whatever feels right: a blessing, a moment of silence, a candle, a shared meal afterwards. Whatever your family would do for a person, a smaller, simpler version usually fits a pet.
The India figure comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How the seasons in Mumbai affect the day
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

Budgeting for a farewell in Mumbai
Package names vary a lot across Asia, and a 'communal' package may exclude the farewell ceremony entirely. Before comparing prices in Mumbai, ask three things: is my pet cremated alone, are the ashes returned, and is there time for a ceremony or prayers beforehand? The table shows published examples from the region.

Permissions to check in Maharashtra before the ceremony
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Maharashtra as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
In India, dedicated pet cremation services are growing in the larger cities, and some operators offer Hindu rituals performed by a priest as part of the farewell. Customs differ by faith and family, so say what you'd like on the first call, whether that's prayers, flowers or simply time together.
Your checklist for the first day
- Take a breath. If your pet has died at home, lay them on their bed or a towel in a cool room. Nothing has to happen in the next hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. Everything else, the timing of the goodbye included, follows from this single decision.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to hold a time, and ask whether they can keep your pet cool until then.
- Send one short message giving the place and time to the handful of people you want present.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
- Hold the farewell, then hand your pet to the collection team or lay them to rest.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.
Marking the loss, now and later
Mumbai rarely slows down, and it can be hard to make space for grief between long commutes and work. Taking time to say goodbye isn't indulgent, and a day off can help more than pushing through. Friends who keep animals, rescuers and online pet-loss groups can be a great support. If the sadness stays heavy for weeks, speaking with a counselor or your doctor is a sensible step.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in India?
For people, yes: about 80%[1] of India deaths end in cremation, according to Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Mumbai follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Mumbai?
Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form. Once home, keep your pet cool and hold the farewell within a day, then bury them where local rules allow or call a crematory to collect. The vet can still arrange cremation later if you change your mind.
Is a pet funeral common in India?
Small farewells are common almost everywhere, even if people don't call them funerals. For people, about 80%[1] of deaths in India end in cremation, and that shapes pet habits too: where cremation is usual, pet farewells often centre on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels more natural.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Mumbai?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [6]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Mumbai within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
