Planning a goodbye for your pet in Delhi

Delhi, India

How families in Delhi say goodbye to a pet

Delhi is a city of many traditions, and some families mark a pet's death with rituals similar to those for people, such as a prayer on the thirteenth day or an annual remembrance. Others prefer something private and quiet. Both are valid. If you live away from family, friends who knew your pet and online pet-loss groups can help, and so can simply telling colleagues why you're quiet this week.

In a big joint or extended family, a pet is often loved by several generations, and each will grieve differently. A short farewell at home before cremation, with a lamp or prayer if that fits your faith, gives everyone a moment together. Ask any provider whether you can be present or have time with your pet first, and include the children.

Witnessed cremation, where you're present as it begins, is easier to find in a metro like Delhi than in smaller places, simply because there are more crematories and more staff to schedule around you. It still needs booking. Mention it on the very first call, ask how many people can attend and whether you can bring music or a few words to read.

Delhi's population is around 11,320,000.

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

Local customs and your pet's farewell

In India, where about 80%[1] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.

The India figure comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

How the seasons in Delhi affect the day

Seasons change the timing of a farewell more than its shape. Many families in Delhi hold the goodbye indoors on the day and move the outdoor part, such as burying ashes, planting a tree or scattering on a favorite walk, to a calmer day with kinder weather. There's no deadline on ashes.

Pet farewell prices for Delhi families

In Hong Kong, the government's free option is collection to landfill, with no ashes returned (1823 government guidance) [5]. A private provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1–5 kg pet and HKD 3,000 for a dog of 20–30 kg [6]. Ask providers near Delhi whether a short ceremony is included or extra.

Local rules worth checking in India

A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in India for burying at home and scattering ashes.

In India, dedicated pet cremation services are growing in the larger cities, and some operators offer Hindu rituals performed by a priest as part of the farewell. Customs differ by faith and family, so say what you'd like on the first call, whether that's prayers, flowers or simply time together.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Check gently that your pet has died: no breath, no heartbeat under your hand, eyes open and unmoving. Call an emergency vet if any doubt remains.
  2. Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly so your pet looks asleep; do this inside the first two hours or so, while the body is still supple.
  3. Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bowel and bladder often release on their own. This is expected and isn't a sign that something was wrong.
  4. Let your other animals come and sniff if they want to. Many owners feel it helps the pets left behind understand the empty bed.
  5. If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, the calls can wait for daylight. Nobody minds if you spend one last quiet night beside them.
  6. Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so the last memory is yours and not a stranger at the front door.

Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders

Grief for a pet can catch people off guard, especially when others treat it lightly. It's normal to feel it for weeks or months, and for it to come back on anniversaries or festivals. If the sadness is affecting your sleep, work or appetite for a long time, speaking with a counselor or your doctor is a sensible step. Asking for help is a sign of how much the animal mattered.

Questions people ask

How do India attitudes to cremation compare?

Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) puts the India human cremation rate at about 80%[1]. We show it on the Delhi page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

What's a viewing, and do I need one?

A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.

What do you say at a pet's funeral?

Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.

What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?

Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.

Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?

Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[8] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
