Pet Funerals in Thailand: what to know
Families who have moved to Thailand from elsewhere often find the local pet funeral customs unfamiliar: different names for services, different burial rules, different ways of returning ashes. If you might move again, keep the ashes in a sealed, labelled urn with the cremation certificate; travelling with them later is far simpler.
Customs around death vary across Thailand, and many families bring a little of their own tradition to a pet's farewell: a blessing, a candle, a shared meal. Below you'll find what pet funeral services typically cost here, the burial and scattering rules worth knowing and every community we cover in Thailand.

How Thailand thinks about funerals and cremation
In Thailand, where about 80.0%[1] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.
That Thailand rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Thailand
Public and private options can differ hugely. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward collects pets under 25 kg for a JPY 3,000 fee with communal cremation and no ashes returned [2]; a private communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times that, by our estimate [3]. In one Japanese survey, about 30% of owners felt a funeral would help them avoid regret [4].
Package names vary a lot across Asia, and a 'communal' package may exclude the farewell ceremony entirely. Before comparing prices in Thailand, ask three things: is my pet cremated alone, are the ashes returned, and is there time for a ceremony or prayers beforehand? The table shows published examples from the region.
| Place and service | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo: witnessed cremation, 20–30 kg dog | JPY 60,500 [5] | Attended, with a monk chanting |
| Tokyo: individual cremation, 20–30 kg dog | JPY 38,500 [5] | Without attending |
| Japan: pet funeral hall package | JPY 60,000 to 80,000 [6] | Ceremony and cremation, 1–5 kg to 25–30 kg pet |
| Singapore: private cremation, 10–20 kg dog | SGD 480 [7] | Columbarium niche from SGD 300 |
| Hong Kong: individual cremation, 20–30 kg dog | HKD 3,000 [8] | Check whether a farewell ceremony is included |

What Thailand allows for burial and scattering
Beaches, rivers and lakes often have their own scattering rules, set by a different authority from parks, and some ask you to scatter a set distance from shore. Here's the general picture for Thailand; for the exact spot, check with whoever manages that land or water.
In Thailand, some pet memorial providers offer a package that includes a temple ceremony with monk blessings before an individual cremation, alongside simpler options. If a Buddhist farewell matters to your family, ask whether the temple visit, cremation, urn and delivery of the ashes are priced separately so you can choose what fits.
Planning a farewell in Thailand, step by step
- Keep your pet cool and indoors, especially in warm weather, while you make calls.
- Ask whether a viewing room or witnessed cremation is possible, plus how much notice they need for either.
- For a pet cemetery burial, ask about the plot, the opening fee, casket or shroud, and whether a graveside service is allowed on the day.
- For a home burial, read up on what Thailand allows, pick ground clear of drains and water, and have the grave ready before people get there.
- Collect a keepsake first: the tags and collar, a snip of fur, an impression of a paw.
- Confirm the price in writing before anyone collects your pet.
- Write down the date they give you for the ashes coming back; the next part of the plan hangs on it.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
The first year brings dates that catch people off guard: your pet's birthday, the first holiday without them, the anniversary of the last vet visit. Put them in the calendar now with something small attached, such as a walk or a candle. If you'd like a lasting marker, our memorial stone planner helps you work out wording, size and cost.

Questions people ask
What usually happens at a pet funeral in Thailand?
Most follow a loose shape: family gathers around the pet at home, at the clinic or in a farewell room at the crematory; someone says a few words; each person has a moment to say goodbye; then the pet is collected, cremated or buried. Many add one ritual, such as a candle, a flower or a letter. The whole thing often takes less than an hour.
Do I need a permit to hold a pet funeral in Thailand?
Not for the farewell itself. Gathering at home, saying a few words and holding a small ceremony need no permission anywhere in Thailand. Permits come into it for what happens next: burial on someone else's land, scattering in parks, on beaches or on water, and any use of a public space for a larger gathering. When in doubt, ask the landowner or the local council first.
What does a pet funeral cost in Thailand compared with the US?
Prices differ by country and currency, but the pattern is the same: individual cremation costs more than communal, a cemetery grave more than cremation, and a farewell room or attended service adds to either. Published examples for Thailand are in the table above; ask local providers for a written quote.
Can I bury my pet at home in Thailand?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.
Can children be part of a pet's farewell in Thailand?
Yes, and most families find it helps. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower or drawing a picture to go with the pet, use plain words like 'died', keep it short and let them step out whenever they want. Our blog has age-by-age ideas.
Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Thailand?
Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Thailand, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.
