Saying goodbye to your pet in Bangkok, your way

Bangkok, Thailand

Pet farewells in Bangkok: the local picture

In a busy, noisy city, the quiet after a pet dies can feel very loud: the empty corner of the condo, the absent greeting at the door. Grief usually comes in waves for weeks or months, and anniversaries and festivals can bring it back. If sadness is affecting your sleep or work for a long time, speaking with a counselor or your doctor is sensible.

Buddhist teaching on impermanence brings comfort to many Thai families, but grief for a pet is still real and deserves time. Talking with family, making merit in the pet's name or visiting a temple can all help. If you live alone in a condo, friends who knew your pet and online pet-loss groups in Thai and English can support you too.

A Bangkok family often has people spread across the metro, and weekday traffic makes a same-day gathering harder than it sounds. Many families split the goodbye in two: a short private farewell at home or the vet on the day, then a relaxed celebration of life a week or two later, once the ashes are home and everyone can plan to come.

Bangkok's population is around 8,281,000.

80.0%[1]

In 2023, 80.0% of deaths in Thailand were cremated (2077 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

A pet at home in Bangkok

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Thailand

Human crematoria in Thailand, where roughly 80.0%[1] of deaths end in cremation, tend to have gardens of remembrance with benches and small plaques. Some pet crematories copy the idea with a memorial wall or garden where families can scatter ashes or add a name. Ask whether there's one and what a plaque costs; it gives the family somewhere to go on the anniversary.

The Thailand figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Planning around heat, cold and rain in Bangkok

Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

Where the money goes in a Bangkok pet funeral

In Hong Kong, the government's free option is collection to landfill, with no ashes returned (1823 government guidance) [5]. A private provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1–5 kg pet and HKD 3,000 for a dog of 20–30 kg [6]. Ask providers near Bangkok whether a short ceremony is included or extra.

What you can and can't do in Thailand

A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Thailand for burying at home and scattering ashes.

In Thailand, some pet memorial providers offer a package that includes a temple ceremony with monk blessings before an individual cremation, alongside simpler options. If a Buddhist farewell matters to your family, ask whether the temple visit, cremation, urn and delivery of the ashes are priced separately so you can choose what fits.

A pet funeral within a day: how to do it

  1. Check gently that your pet has died: no breathing, no heartbeat against the chest, eyes open and still. If you're not sure, ring an emergency vet.
  2. Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly into a sleeping shape within the first couple of hours, before the body stiffens.
  3. Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for the bladder or bowel to empty after death, and it doesn't mean anything went wrong.
  4. Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
  5. If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
  6. Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so the last memory is yours and not a stranger at the front door.

Marking the loss, now and later

In Bangkok, a pet's death is often marked with a small ceremony, and some families invite monks to chant or hold a short rite at a temple before cremation. If that matters to you, ask the provider whether a ceremony can be arranged or whether you can attend the cremation. Children can take part too, perhaps by placing flowers or a favorite toy.

Questions people ask

Why does the Bangkok page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 80.0%[1] of Thailand residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Do pet funeral homes exist near Bangkok?

Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Bangkok you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.

Should young children come to a pet's farewell?

Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.

What's a viewing, and do I need one?

A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.

What do you say at a pet's funeral?

Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.

How soon should a pet funeral happen?

There's no fixed rule. Many families hold a short farewell on the day, before collection or burial, and a larger gathering later when the ashes come home. If people need time to travel, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in a cold room and book a viewing there when everyone arrives.
