How families in Busan say goodbye to a pet
Holidays like Chuseok and Seollal bring families together in Busan and can stir up grief when a pet is missing from the gathering. Some families light a candle or place a photo on those days. With children, be honest and simple about what happened, and let them help with a farewell by choosing a toy or drawing to go with the ashes.
The sea is part of daily life in Busan, and looking out at a shore you once shared with your pet can be both painful and comforting. Grief after a pet's death is real and deserves time. Talk to people who knew your pet, hold a small remembrance at home if it helps, and consider pet loss counseling or online groups if the heaviness stays for weeks rather than days.
Big-city homes shape the farewell. If you live in an apartment in Busan, a garden goodbye may not be possible, but a living room with the curtains drawn, a candle and your pet on their own bed works just as well. Ask the collection team to come after the ceremony, not during it, and warn the building's front desk so nobody hurries you at the lift.

Funeral traditions in South Korea and your pet
With cremation the choice for roughly 92.43%[1] of people in South Korea, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.

How the seasons in Busan affect the day
Seasons change the timing of a farewell more than its shape. Many families in Busan hold the goodbye indoors on the day and move the outdoor part, such as burying ashes, planting a tree or scattering on a favorite walk, to a calmer day with kinder weather. There's no deadline on ashes.

What a pet funeral costs in Busan
Public and private options can differ hugely. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward collects pets under 25 kg for a JPY 3,000 fee with communal cremation and no ashes returned [5]; a private communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times that, by our estimate [6]. In one Japanese survey, about 30% of owners felt a funeral would help them avoid regret [7].

Before you dig or scatter in South Korea
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than South Korea as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
In South Korea, pet funeral companies commonly offer a farewell ceremony and cremation, and some provide transport to their facility. Check whether transport covers the return trip: at least one provider's carriage service is one-way, with a taxi arranged afterwards. Plan who will carry the urn home and how the family will travel.
Planning a farewell in Busan, step by step
- Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, then arrange the vet's visit to the house and agree what happens afterwards, all in one call.
- Fill the days before with small favorites: an unhurried walk, a sunny spot on the floor, the food they're normally not allowed.
- Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Both are loving choices, and nobody should be talked into either.
- Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
- When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
- Walk out to the car or van with your pet should you want to. Teams often carry pets on a basket or stretcher and are glad to let you take one end.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Busan?
The closest communities we cover are Daegu (about 55 miles), Daejeon (about 125 miles) and Gwangju (about 126 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Busan too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in South Korea?
For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Busan follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is there a pet cemetery near Busan?
Many large metros have at least one pet cemetery within driving distance, and some human cemeteries now have a pet section. Ask your vet which cemeteries they work with, or send us a note and we'll look. When you call, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Busan within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
