Daegu, South Korea
What planning a pet funeral in Daegu is like
Pet funeral facilities serving Daegu usually offer a short farewell before cremation, in a quiet room where the family can sit with their pet, share their grief and say goodbye together. You can add flowers, photos, a letter or a favorite toy. Tell us your district and what matters to you, and we'll write back by email with choices that fit your family's wishes.
Holidays like Chuseok and Seollal bring Daegu families together, and a pet's absence, and the grief that comes with it, can be felt keenly at those gatherings. Some families set out a photo or light a candle as a quiet remembrance. With children, explain what happened honestly in simple words and let them help with the farewell, perhaps by writing a note or choosing a toy to go with the ashes.
Parks are part of life in Daegu, and many families want to say goodbye on their dog's favorite walk. A small, quiet gathering in a public park usually needs no permit, but scattering ashes or planting something often does. Keep it to a few people, avoid busy paths and times, and check the park authority's rules before you bring the urn.
Daegu is home to about 2,461,000 people.
Families in Daegu often end up using a provider from Busan (55 miles), Daejeon (76 miles) and Gwangju (110 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Funeral traditions in South Korea and your pet
With about 92.43%[1] of people in South Korea cremated, a cremation is the familiar end to a funeral here, and many families want a pet's farewell to echo it on a small scale. You can borrow whatever feels right: a blessing, a moment of silence, a candle, a shared meal afterwards. Whatever your family would do for a person, a smaller, simpler version usually fits a pet.
We take the South Korea rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Daegu, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning an outdoor goodbye in Daegu's climate
Whatever the forecast in Daegu, have a sheltered spot ready for the moment your pet is carried from the house to the waiting vehicle: a porch, a garage, even a large umbrella. Rain or glare on the doorstep turns a careful handover into a rushed one, and it's the moment many people remember most clearly.

What a pet funeral costs in Daegu
Public and private options can differ hugely. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward collects pets under 25 kg for a JPY 3,000 fee with communal cremation and no ashes returned [5]; a private communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times that, by our estimate [6]. In one Japanese survey, about 30% of owners felt a funeral would help them avoid regret [7].

Local rules worth checking in South Korea
A grave in the garden stays with the house when you sell it, which is the question few people ask at the graveside. Before you bury, think about where you'll be living in five or ten years, then check the South Korea notes below.
In South Korea, pet funeral companies commonly offer a farewell ceremony and cremation, and some provide transport to their facility. Check whether transport covers the return trip: at least one provider's carriage service is one-way, with a taxi arranged afterwards. Plan who will carry the urn home and how the family will travel.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. A very small animal produces only a trace of ash; ask the crematory how it's kept apart from other pets' and what container it's returned in.
- For a garden grave, pick a spot on land you expect to keep, check the local rules, and plan a marker such as a flat stone or a pot plant.
- Invite whoever looked after them, even if that's one child and one parent. A small animal can leave a big gap.
- Say a few words or read a note, then lay a flower or a pinch of their favorite food on the lid.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, rather than the same afternoon, so the room doesn't feel suddenly empty.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
Daegu's long, hot summers keep many people indoors, and a pet is often the companion of those quiet evenings at home. Losing them can leave an apartment feeling very still. Let friends and family who knew your pet share memories, hold a small remembrance with a photo and candle, and consider pet loss counseling or online groups if the sadness stays heavy for weeks.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Daegu?
Usually yes. Busan is about 55 miles away, Daejeon is about 76 miles away and Gwangju is about 110 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in South Korea?
For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Daegu follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Daegu?
Sometimes, with permission. Parks, beaches and nature reserves have their own rules, and many ask you to contact the park authority first. Private land needs the owner's permission. Choose a quiet time and spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter low and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [9]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Is there a pet cemetery near Daegu?
Many large metros have at least one pet cemetery within driving distance, and some human cemeteries now have a pet section. Ask your vet which cemeteries they work with, or send us a note and we'll look. When you call, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
Do people hold funerals for hamsters, birds and other small pets?
Plenty do. A small pet's farewell needs little more than a lined box, a few words and a flower, and children often need it more than adults expect. Choose a garden grave where local rules allow and you expect to stay, or ask a crematory about individual cremation for small animals, since the amount of ash is tiny. Mark the spot with a stone or a pot plant.
