Choosing where the farewell happens in Shanghai
Chinese remembrance traditions, such as the seventh day after a death and Qingming in spring, give some families a framework for grieving a pet. Others prefer a quiet ritual of their own: a candle, a photo, a letter to the pet. With children, tell the truth simply, let them ask questions, and give them a small role in the goodbye.
In a city this crowded and fast, losing a pet can leave you feeling alone in a very full place. A short farewell before cremation gives you time to say goodbye properly. Ask whether you can see your pet first or be present, and whether a farewell room is available. Bring something familiar, like a blanket, if that helps you.
A Shanghai family often has people spread across the metro, and weekday traffic makes a same-day gathering harder than it sounds. Many families split the goodbye in two: a short private farewell at home or the vet on the day, then a relaxed celebration of life a week or two later, once the ashes are home and everyone can plan to come.
About 24,870,000 people live in Shanghai.

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in China
Some pet cemeteries also run a crematory, which suits China, with cremation at roughly 50%[1] and burial still common. If there's one near you, you can see a grave site and ask about cremation in the same visit, then decide with both options in front of you rather than on the phone.
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019) is where the China figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Shanghai tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Seasons change the timing of a farewell more than its shape. Many families in Shanghai hold the goodbye indoors on the day and move the outdoor part, such as burying ashes, planting a tree or scattering on a favorite walk, to a calmer day with kinder weather. There's no deadline on ashes.

Where the money goes in a Shanghai pet funeral
In Hong Kong, the government's free option is collection to landfill, with no ashes returned (1823 government guidance) [5]. A private provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1–5 kg pet and HKD 3,000 for a dog of 20–30 kg [6]. Ask providers near Shanghai whether a short ceremony is included or extra.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for China: China costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in China
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what China says.
Your checklist for the first day
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, even if the decision was made in a rush. You don't have to leave straight away.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. The practice can hold your pet in cold storage for a day; ask for that and take the time to decide.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, then ask if you're free to pick another provider, or to bring your pet home and bury them yourself.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur while your pet is still in the room; once they've gone it's far harder to organize.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask whether they can visit the clinic to say goodbye before the collection.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
Many young professionals in Shanghai live far from their parents, and a pet may have been their closest daily companion. Grief for that bond is real. Online pet-loss communities and friends who keep animals can help, and counselors who understand pet loss are available in the city. If the sadness stays heavy for weeks, seeking support is a sensible step.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in China?
For people, yes: about 50%[1] of China deaths end in cremation, according to Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Shanghai follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Do pet funeral homes exist near Shanghai?
Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Shanghai you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.
Can I bury my pet at home in Shanghai?
It depends on the country and often the local council. Germany allows it on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil and not in water-protection areas; Dubai doesn't permit animal burial at all; Japan bans it in public places such as parks. Ask your vet or local authority before digging, or consider a pet cemetery.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [8]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Shanghai within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
What's a viewing, and do I need one?
A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.
