Pet Funerals in Shanghai: what to know

Most families in Shanghai never think about a pet funeral until the day it's needed, and that's fine: a meaningful farewell can be planned within a day. This page gives you the regional picture, including costs, burial and scattering rules and how to include children. Each city page below adds local weather and nearby options.

The first call to a provider anywhere in Shanghai is easier with four facts ready: your pet's weight, where they are now, whether you want the ashes back and whether anyone wants to be present. With those, a crematory or cemetery can give you a real price and a time. They're also what our request form asks for.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet

When a place splits its funerals between burial and cremation, as Shanghai does with about 50%[1] cremated, local providers usually offer both, and the choice often comes down to one question: do you want a place to visit, or something to keep close? A grave fixes the memorial to one spot; ashes can move house with you.

Pet farewell prices for Shanghai families

In Shanghai, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [2]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.

In Hong Kong, the government's free option is collection to landfill, with no ashes returned (1823 government guidance) [3]. A private provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1–5 kg pet and HKD 3,000 for a dog of 20–30 kg [4]. Ask providers near Shanghai whether a short ceremony is included or extra.

What you can and can't do in Shanghai

Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Shanghai.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Check gently that your pet has died: no breath, no heartbeat under your hand, eyes open and unmoving. Call an emergency vet if any doubt remains.
  2. Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly into a sleeping shape within the first couple of hours, before the body stiffens.
  3. Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bowel and bladder often release on their own. This is expected and isn't a sign that something was wrong.
  4. Let your other animals come and sniff if they want to. Many owners feel it helps the pets left behind understand the empty bed.
  5. If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
  6. Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so that the last thing you remember is your own farewell and not an unfamiliar face at the door.

Marking the loss, now and later

The first year brings dates that catch people off guard: your pet's birthday, the first holiday without them, the anniversary of the last vet visit. Put them in the calendar now with something small attached, such as a walk or a candle. If you'd like a lasting marker, our memorial stone planner helps you work out wording, size and cost.

Questions people ask

Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Shanghai?

Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Shanghai, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.

What does a pet funeral cost in Shanghai compared with the US?

Prices differ by country and currency, but the pattern is the same: individual cremation costs more than communal, a cemetery grave more than cremation, and a farewell room or attended service adds to either. Published examples for Shanghai are in the table above; ask local providers for a written quote.

What usually happens at a pet funeral in Shanghai?

Most follow a loose shape: family gathers around the pet at home, at the clinic or in a farewell room at the crematory; someone says a few words; each person has a moment to say goodbye; then the pet is collected, cremated or buried. Many add one ritual, such as a candle, a flower or a letter. The whole thing often takes less than an hour.

How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in Shanghai?

Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [8], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [9]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.

Can I bury my pet at home in Shanghai?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.

Where can I find a pet cemetery in Shanghai?

Pet cemeteries are most common around the larger cities in Shanghai, and some human cemeteries now have pet sections. Ask your vet, check your city page on this site or send us a note. When you call a cemetery, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
