Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in England
With about 83.0%[5] of people in England cremated, a cremation is the familiar end to a funeral here, and many families want a pet's farewell to echo it on a small scale. You can borrow whatever feels right: a blessing, a moment of silence, a candle, a shared meal afterwards. Whatever your family would do for a person, a smaller, simpler version usually fits a pet.
We take the England rate from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for London, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning around heat, cold and rain in London
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.
Pet funeral and burial prices for families in London
UK cremation prices are unusually well documented thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority's review. Individual dog cremation through the large vet groups had a median of about GBP 249.47[6], and independent crematoria often charge less. Farewell rooms and attended cremations aren't priced nationally, so ask each crematorium in or near London directly.

Before you dig or scatter in England
A grave in the garden stays with the house when you sell it, which is the question few people ask at the graveside. Before you bury, think about where you'll be living in five or ten years, then check the England notes below.
In England, you can bury a pet at home if you own the land or have the owner's agreement, and there's no set minimum depth for a small pet, but stay away from water sources. Pet cemeteries must register with the government's animal health agency and bury at least 0.5 m deep [8]. Scattering ashes on someone else's land needs their permission. Many crematoria will also let you sit with your pet first; ask.
Start with the England rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat London's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your checklist for the first day
- Check gently that your pet has died: no breathing, no heartbeat against the chest, eyes open and still. If you're not sure, ring an emergency vet.
- Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly into a sleeping shape within the first couple of hours, before the body stiffens.
- Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for the bladder or bowel to empty after death, and it doesn't mean anything went wrong.
- Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
- If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
- Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so the last memory is yours and not a stranger at the front door.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
If you have children, London schools and neighbors will often notice when a family pet is suddenly missing from daily life, and questions can come from all sides. Be honest with children in simple words, avoid saying the pet went to sleep, and give them a small role in the farewell, such as drawing a picture or choosing a spot for a memorial plant. Grief tends to come in waves, particularly around familiar routines and anniversaries.

Can I be there when my pet is cremated in London?
Many crematories offer a witnessed or attended cremation, where you're present as it begins or wait nearby. It needs booking, because staff and the chamber are scheduled around you. Posted US surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 [9]. In a city the size of London there's often more than one provider to ask, so raise it on your first call.
How much does a pet cemetery burial cost in London?
UK pet cemetery plot fees often run from £200 to £800 or more [10], depending on location and size. At one Sussex cemetery, a green burial costs £650–£810[11] by weight and a formal burial with coffin and attended service £980–£1,140[12], with annual maintenance on top.
