A goodbye that fits life in Beijing
Traditional remembrance in China has clear moments, such as the seventh day, Qingming and anniversaries, and some families use those same moments for a pet. Others find a personal ritual helps more: lighting a candle, looking at photos together, or writing down favorite memories. Children cope better when they're told honestly and included in something small and simple, like choosing the photo that sits beside the ashes.
Pets in Beijing are often part of three generations living close together, and grandparents may have been the ones caring for the animal every day. Include them in the goodbye. A short farewell before cremation, at home or at the provider, can give the whole family a moment together. Ask what's possible, including whether you can see your pet before or be present during the cremation.
Parks are part of life in Beijing, and many families want to say goodbye on their dog's favorite walk. A small, quiet gathering in a public park usually needs no permit, but scattering ashes or planting something often does. Keep it to a few people, avoid busy paths and times, and check the park authority's rules before you bring the urn.

Funeral traditions in China and your pet
In a place where roughly 50%[1] of people are cremated, families follow a mix of faiths, some of which prefer burial for people. Many traditions say little about animals' remains, so a pet's farewell is usually a family choice. If it matters to you, a quick word with your faith leader before the vet visit saves second thoughts later.
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019) is where the China figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Beijing tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Beijing
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

What a pet funeral costs in Beijing
In Beijing, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [5]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.

What China allows for burial and scattering
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what China says.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: use the pet's name and the word died, and avoid softer phrases like 'went away' or 'went to sleep'.
- Let them choose whether to see their pet before the collection or burial; for some children, seeing settles questions they can't put into words.
- Offer choices rather than jobs: which blanket, how to decorate the box, or whether to draw a card that goes with their pet.
- Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes with room to speak or stay silent, and no adult stepping in to fix it.
- Expect questions later, often at bedtime, and answer them honestly and briefly.
- Let their teacher or childminder know, which means a withdrawn or tearful child makes sense to the grown-ups at school.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
In a fast city where work comes first, it can be hard to make time to grieve. Taking an afternoon to say goodbye isn't indulgent. Many people find it helps to talk with friends who also keep pets or to join online pet-loss groups. If the sadness stays heavy for weeks, speaking with a counselor or doctor is a reasonable step.

Questions people ask
How do China attitudes to cremation compare?
Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019) puts the China human cremation rate at about 50%[1]. We show it on the Beijing page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Beijing?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[7] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
What happens if my pet dies at night or at the weekend in Beijing?
Keep your pet cool and indoors, and call your nearest emergency vet; a city the size of Beijing usually has one open around the clock. They can hold your pet until the crematory or cemetery opens. The farewell doesn't have to happen that night; you can plan a viewing or home ceremony for the next day.
