Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

What planning a pet funeral in Abu Dhabi is like

Life in Abu Dhabi follows the seasons: shuttered indoors through the summer, outdoors on the Corniche, the beaches and the terraces from October to April. A pet shared both halves of that year with you, and the first cool season without them can be hard. Marking the anniversary outdoors in winter, or sharing photos with family in another country, gives the loss a gentle place in the calendar.

A farewell in Abu Dhabi often happens at the vet clinic, since home euthanasia visits are less common than in some countries. Ask your vet whether you can have time with your pet in a quiet room before and after, and whether family members abroad can join by video. If you would prefer a home visit, ask early, as availability can be limited, especially around public holidays.

Witnessed cremation, where you're present as it begins, is easier to find in a metro like Abu Dhabi than in smaller places, simply because there are more crematories and more staff to schedule around you. It still needs booking. Mention it on the very first call, ask how many people can attend and whether you can bring music or a few words to read.

With roughly 1,483,000 residents, Abu Dhabi is one of the United Arab Emirates communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Emirates Hills (65 miles), Dubai (76 miles, a larger centre) and Sharjah (89 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Abu Dhabi too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

3-5% of body weight[4]

A pet at home in Abu Dhabi

Funeral traditions in United Arab Emirates and your pet

Every culture has its own way of marking death, and many now make room for animals. In some places, temples hold regular memorial prayers for pets; in others, a family meal and a few stories is the whole ceremony. In Abu Dhabi, choose what your family would recognise as respectful, and ask any provider whether they can accommodate it.

Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Abu Dhabi

Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Abu Dhabi: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Abu Dhabi

In the UAE, separate cremation for a pet up to 30 kg costs about AED 2,300 to 2,700 [5], several times the US average, and burial isn't generally permitted. Wherever you are, the farewell itself can be held at home before collection at little cost. Ask providers near Abu Dhabi what a viewing or witnessed service adds.

What United Arab Emirates allows for burial and scattering

Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than United Arab Emirates as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.

In the UAE, animal burial isn't permitted in Dubai, and the municipal route is mass cremation with no ashes returned [7]. For a farewell, families use a private provider. Dubai's central veterinary laboratory lists an individual cremation with witnessing as a separate service, so being present is possible if you ask for it by name.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, settle them onto a towel or their own bed somewhere cool. There is no decision you need to make within the hour.
  2. Decide cremation or burial first. That one choice sets the clock for everything else, including when the farewell can happen.
  3. Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to hold a time, and ask whether they can keep your pet cool until then.
  4. Send one short message to the few people who should be there, with the time and place.
  5. Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
  6. Hold the farewell, and afterwards either bury your pet or pass them over to whoever is collecting.
  7. Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.

Remembering your pet in Abu Dhabi

Grief can feel especially isolating for expatriates far from family, and a pet is often the closest companion in a new country. Online pet loss groups, community groups and counsellors exist in Abu Dhabi, and your vet can often point you to them. Talking to friends who knew your pet, or joining a video call with family abroad, can help.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Abu Dhabi?

Usually yes. Emirates Hills is about 65 miles away, Dubai is about 76 miles away and Sharjah is about 89 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What's a viewing, and do I need one?

A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.

Can we plan a pet funeral in Abu Dhabi within a day?

Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.

Do pet funeral homes exist near Abu Dhabi?

Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Abu Dhabi you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.

Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?

Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[8] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
