Milan, Lombardy
A goodbye that fits life in Milan
The pace of work in Milan can make it hard to stop and grieve, and a pet may have been the one steady presence at home. Italian-language pet loss groups and counsellors exist, and your vet can often recommend one. Talking to friends who knew your pet, or holding a small farewell with a candle and a few words, helps the loss feel acknowledged rather than brushed aside.
A farewell in Milan often happens at home or at the vet's surgery, since few families have a garden. You can ask for a home visit so your pet can stay somewhere familiar, and ask the aftercare provider whether you can sit with your pet before collection or attend the cremation. Letting close friends or family know in advance means they can come and say goodbye.
Long hours and commutes shape daily life in Milan, and a pet's death rarely waits for a day off. In an RSPCA survey of bereaved UK owners, 28.4%[1] couldn't take time off work afterwards. An evening goodbye at home and a weekend gathering can fit around a working week, and asking your manager for a morning off is reasonable.
About 1,371,000 people live in Milan, which makes it the largest of the 2 Lombardy communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Como (24 miles), Genoa (74 miles) and Turin (78 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
Because burial still leads in Italy, with cremation at around 38.16%[2], families often ask what to bury a pet in. A cotton sheet, a wool blanket or a plain untreated wooden box all break down naturally. Plastic, vinyl-covered beds and sealed caskets don't, and they can stop a garden grave settling for years.
The Italy figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Planning around heat, cold and rain in Milan
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

Budgeting for a farewell in Milan
Across Europe, a pet funeral usually means individual cremation with the ashes returned, or a grave in a pet cemetery. Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250 [6]. Cremation prices vary by country and weight; the table shows published examples to give you a feel for Italy.
The full price table by product is on our Lombardy page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Local rules worth checking in Lombardy
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Lombardy says.
In Italy, some pet crematoria offer electronic tracing and a certificate, and at least one lets families watch an individual cremation on a monitor on request. Ask whether that's possible if you'd like to be present without standing by the chamber.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Keep your pet cool inside the house while you phone around; this matters most in warm weather.
- Ask whether a viewing room or witnessed cremation is possible, plus how much notice they need for either.
- For a pet cemetery burial, ask about the plot, the opening fee, casket or shroud, and whether a graveside service is allowed on the day.
- For a home burial, read up on what Lombardy allows, pick ground clear of drains and water, and have the grave ready before people get there.
- Collect a keepsake first: a paw print, a clipping of fur, the collar and tags.
- Confirm the price in writing before the pickup is allowed to happen.
- Write down the date they give you for the ashes coming back; the next part of the plan hangs on it.
Marking the loss, now and later
August in Milan is famously quiet as the city empties for the holidays, and those long, empty weeks can make a recent loss feel heavier. That is normal. Some families mark the time with a small ritual, like visiting a favourite park at dusk or lighting a candle at home; others take a trip together and bring the pet's photo along. Grief tends to soften when it has a place to go.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Milan?
Usually yes. Como is about 24 miles away, Genoa is about 74 miles away and Turin is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[2]. We show it on the Milan page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is there a pet cemetery near Milan?
Many large metros have at least one pet cemetery within driving distance, and some human cemeteries now have a pet section. Ask your vet which cemeteries they work with, or send us a note and we'll look. When you call, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?
Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [8]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Milan?
Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Lombardy rules allow it.
