Saying goodbye to your pet in Turin, your way

Turin, Piedmont

Pet farewells in Turin: the local picture

Many Turin families are Catholic, and some bring an animal's memory to church, lighting a candle or remembering it around the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in January, when animals are traditionally blessed in parts of Italy. For others, a quiet moment at home is closer to what they want. Either can sit alongside a farewell before the cremation. If the grief lingers for months, speaking to a counsellor is reasonable.

Turin is often described as reserved, and many residents grieve quietly and privately. That is fine. A small farewell at home, with a candle and a photo, or a few words shared with family before the cremation, can be enough, and there is no need for a larger gathering unless you want one. If you would like to talk to someone, your vet can often point you toward pet-loss support in Piedmont.

Parks are part of life in Turin, and many families want to say goodbye on their dog's favorite walk. A small, quiet gathering in a public park usually needs no permit, but scattering ashes or planting something often does. Keep it to a few people, avoid busy paths and times, and check the park authority's rules before you bring the urn.

Turin is home to about 886,000 people.

The closest communities we cover are Genoa (77 miles), Milan (78 miles) and Como (85 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Turin too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet

In communities where burial is still the norm, like Italy at about 38.16%[1] cremated, sitting up with the body before a funeral is a remembered custom for some families. A short version works for a pet: keep them on their bed in a cool room for an evening so relatives can drop by, then bury or hand over in the morning. In warm weather, keep it to a few hours.

For the Italy figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Turin rather than as pet data.

When the weather shapes the goodbye

If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Turin, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

Where the money goes in a Turin pet funeral

In Turin, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room or an attended service. Always ask for individual cremation by name if you want the ashes back.

The Piedmont price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Local rules worth checking in Piedmont

Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Piedmont.

In Italy, some pet crematoria offer electronic tracing and a certificate, and at least one lets families watch an individual cremation on a monitor on request. Ask whether that's possible if you'd like to be present without standing by the chamber.

Your checklist for the first day

  1. Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, then arrange the vet's visit to the house and agree what happens afterwards, all in one call.
  2. Fill the days before with small favorites: a slow walk, a patch of sun, the treat that's usually off limits.
  3. Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Staying and stepping out are equally loving, and no one should be pushed either way.
  4. Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
  5. When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. An hour's delay on the pickup is fine, and the vet can leave the room if you'd rather be alone.
  6. Walk out to the car or van with your pet should you want to. Teams often carry pets on a basket or stretcher and are glad to let you take one end.

Remembering your pet in Turin

The foggy Turin winter, when the sun can disappear behind low grey cloud for days, can make grief feel heavier, especially if your days were shaped around caring for an animal. Try to keep some structure: daylight time outdoors along the Po or up on the hill, a regular call with a friend, something small in the evenings. A planned farewell, even a simple one, gives the household a clear moment to share memories.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Turin?

Usually yes. Genoa is about 77 miles away, Milan is about 78 miles away and Como is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Turin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What happens if my pet dies at night or at the weekend in Turin?

Keep your pet cool and indoors, and call your nearest emergency vet; a city the size of Turin usually has one open around the clock. They can hold your pet until the crematory or cemetery opens. The farewell doesn't have to happen that night; you can plan a viewing or home ceremony for the next day.

What's a viewing, and do I need one?

A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.

How soon should a pet funeral happen?

There's no fixed rule. Many families hold a short farewell on the day, before collection or burial, and a larger gathering later when the ashes come home. If people need time to travel, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in a cold room and book a viewing there when everyone arrives.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
