Only about 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and a graveside farewell will feel natural to many families here. For pets, that often means a spot in the garden or on family land, with a few words said and a stone or shrub to mark it. Check local rules, and choose somewhere you'll be able to visit.
We take the Italy rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Como, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

What Lombardy allows for burial and scattering
Renting changes what you can do. Many leases forbid digging, and a landlord can ask for anything buried to be removed. If you rent in Lombardy, a pet cemetery, cremation, or a big garden container holding the ashes sidesteps the problem. The wider rules are below.
In Italy, some pet crematoria offer electronic tracing and a certificate, and at least one lets families watch an individual cremation on a monitor on request. Ask whether that's possible if you'd like to be present without standing by the chamber.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, then arrange the vet's visit to the house and agree what happens afterwards, all in one call.
- Fill the days before with small favorites: an unhurried walk, a sunny spot on the floor, the food they're normally not allowed.
- Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Staying and stepping out are equally loving, and no one should be pushed either way.
- Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, plus any letter, drawing or toy you'd like cremated or buried alongside.
- When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
- Walk out to the car or van with your pet should you want to. Teams often carry pets on a basket or stretcher and are glad to let you take one end.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Summer in Como brings crowds along the lakefront, and grieving among holidaymakers can feel lonely. Find a quieter hour: early morning at Brunate before the funicular fills, or an evening by the water once the day-trippers have left. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Como?
Usually yes. Milan is about 24 miles away, Turin is about 85 miles away and Verona is about 96 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Como within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Como?
Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form.
