Pet Funerals in Lombardy: what to know
Prices for the same farewell can vary a lot within Lombardy. Home euthanasia, private cremation and cemetery plots tend to cost more in and around Milan and Como, and less in smaller towns, though a long collection drive can wipe out the saving. Whatever you choose, ask each provider for a single written total before anything is booked.
Not every farewell in Lombardy involves a crematory or a cemetery. Some families bury on their own land, some choose communal cremation and hold a goodbye at home first, and some keep the ceremony entirely private. Each is a respectful choice. This page sets out the costs and rules so you can pick the one that fits your family.

Funeral traditions in Lombardy and your pet
Burial is still the norm for people in Lombardy, where only about 38.16%[1] are cremated. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and less choice of farewell rooms. It doesn't limit the goodbye itself, though. A home ceremony before collection, or a graveside service in the garden, is always possible where local rules allow.
We take the Lombardy percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Lombardy
In Lombardy, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room or an attended service. Always ask for individual cremation by name if you want the ashes back.
Some European crematoria include a farewell room with individual cremation and leave it out of the cheaper shared option, so the price difference buys more than just the ashes. Ask exactly what's included before you compare. In the Netherlands, a few pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost, so check your policy too.
| Country and service | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Germany: pet cemetery grave | EUR 150 to 250 [2] | About 120 pet cemeteries nationwide |
| Germany: individual cremation | EUR 165 to 375 [3] | Collective EUR 85 to 205 |
| France: individual cremation, 20 kg dog | EUR 150 to 250 [4] | Collective EUR 70 to 120 |
| Netherlands: individual dog cremation | about EUR 300 [5] | Average; some insurers reimburse part |
| Ireland: individual cremation, up to 10 kg | EUR 250 [6] | Listed by one Irish crematorium |

Permissions to check in Lombardy before the ceremony
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Lombardy says.
In Italy, some pet crematoria offer electronic tracing and a certificate, and at least one lets families watch an individual cremation on a monitor on request. Ask whether that's possible if you'd like to be present without standing by the chamber.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Call the nearest emergency vet wherever you are. They can confirm the death, keep your pet cool and explain what's possible locally.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation near where you are. Crossing a border or boarding a plane with a body is rarely simple.
- If you cremate away from home, find out how you'll get the ashes back: kept until you can pick them up, or posted with tracking and a signature on delivery.
- Say a short goodbye at the clinic before you leave, however incomplete it seems. A proper farewell can wait until you're back home.
- Keep the vet's paperwork and receipts in case an insurer, airline or border officer asks for them.
- Hold the family farewell once your pet or the ashes are home, so the people who stayed behind are part of it too.
Marking the loss, now and later
A donation to a local shelter in your pet's name, a walk along their old route each year, or a candle lit on the day they died are simple ways to keep marking the loss. In Lombardy, some families make the walk a small tradition with the same people who came to the farewell.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Lombardy?
Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land have their own rules, and many ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter low and downwind, away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Do I need a permit to hold a pet funeral in Lombardy?
Not for the farewell itself. Gathering at home, saying a few words and holding a small ceremony need no permission anywhere in Lombardy. Permits come into it for what happens next: burial on someone else's land, scattering in parks, on beaches or on water, and any use of a public space for a larger gathering. When in doubt, ask the landowner or the local council first.
How many communities do you cover in Lombardy?
We have local pet funeral guides for 2 communities in Lombardy, including Milan and Como. Each page covers local weather and timing for outdoor farewells, typical costs, burial and scattering rules and how to plan a goodbye within a day.
Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Lombardy?
Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Lombardy, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.
Can I bury my pet at home in Lombardy?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.
Where can I find a pet cemetery in Lombardy?
Pet cemeteries are most common around the larger cities in Lombardy, and some human cemeteries now have pet sections. Ask your vet, check your city page on this site or send us a note. When you call a cemetery, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
