Edmonds, Washington
Where a goodbye can happen in Edmonds
Spring and summer bring Edmonds' waterfront festivals and busy weekends, which can be hard in the first months after a loss. A private remembrance on a calmer day, perhaps on the anniversary, can feel better. The remains don't deteriorate, so there's no deadline to decide what comes next. Some families wait for the tulips or rhododendrons to bloom before gathering.
For older residents who live alone, the loss of an animal can mean losing daily structure and company as well as a friend. Pet-loss phone lines, online groups, senior center programs and counselors familiar with animal loss can all help. Letting a neighbor or family member know what happened is a good first step. Some people also find comfort in volunteering with a local animal shelter once the first weeks have passed.
Neighbours in a place like Edmonds often offer to help, and it's fine to say yes. Someone with a small digger or a strong back can prepare a grave, a friend can mind the children for an hour, and someone else can bring supper so nobody has to cook that night. Accepting help is part of how small communities mark a loss.
Edmonds is home to about 42,748 people, the 28th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Edmonds are based about 14 miles away in Seattle, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Lynnwood (3 miles), Mountlake Terrace (3 miles) and Shoreline (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Edmonds as well.
Our estimate
15,500
Edmonds: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
42,748 ÷ 2.5 = 17,099 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,300
Estimated dog and cat losses in Edmonds each year
How we calculated this
15,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Funeral traditions in Washington and your pet
Cremation is the usual choice for people in Washington, at about 79.1%[5]. For pets, that often means the funeral is a gathering around the ashes rather than a burial: a celebration of life at home, a scattering on a favorite walk or a small planting in the garden. None of those needs a venue, and all of them can happen weeks later, when everyone is ready.
For the Washington figure we rely on Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Edmonds rather than as pet data.
How the seasons in Edmonds affect the day
Gentle weather in Edmonds suits the kind of farewell pets would have enjoyed: a picnic on a favorite field, a slow walk along a river path, a barbecue with the neighbours who threw the ball back over the fence. Bring a folding table, a framed photo and a water bowl for any dog guests, and let it be sociable.
A mild climate means you can plant almost any time of year in Edmonds, so a memorial shrub or tree can go in the same week as the farewell instead of waiting for spring. Pick something that suits your soil and flowers around the month your pet died. Our memorial tree finder helps you narrow the choice.

Budgeting for a farewell in Edmonds
If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [6]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[7] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near Edmonds for a cremains plot price too.
The Washington price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Local rules worth checking in Washington
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Washington says.
To find your county or city office in Washington, start with the official Washington local government directory.
The Washington page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Edmonds's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Decide who needs to be there. A small circle is easier to gather in a day; a bigger gathering can come later.
- Pick the place: cemetery, crematory farewell room, the route of a favorite walk, the garden, or simply home.
- Check anything that needs permission, for example a burial on somebody else's property or scattering ashes in a public park.
- Plan a loose running order: gather, open, share memories, a reading or song, a ritual, the farewell.
- Arrange the handover or the burial to follow the ceremony immediately, rather than leaving people standing about.
- Look after yourself afterwards. Have a meal, accept offered help, and leave the lead hanging until you feel like moving it.
Keeping their memory alive in Edmonds
Some Edmonds families hold a quiet farewell at home overlooking the Sound, sharing photos and a favorite toy or blanket. Others ask the provider about a short private viewing before cremation. Neither is more correct; choose what feels right for your household, and ask in advance whether a viewing costs extra. If family live out of town, a video call lets them join in and say a few words.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Edmonds?
Usually yes. Lynnwood is about 3 miles away, Mountlake Terrace is about 3 miles away and Shoreline is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Edmonds page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 79.1%[5] of Washington residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Seattle to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Seattle (roughly 14 miles from Edmonds) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Edmonds climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 77°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Edmonds?
Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Seattle, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
How soon should a pet funeral happen?
There's no fixed rule. Many families hold a short farewell on the day, before collection or burial, and a larger gathering later when the ashes come home. If people need time to travel, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in a cold room and book a viewing there when everyone arrives.
