Midlothian, Texas
Choosing where the farewell happens in Midlothian
A farewell in Midlothian might be held by the barn at sunset, beneath the big pecan out back or in a clinic's comfort room. Families with land sometimes gather for a few words at a favorite spot in the pasture. When out-of-town relatives want to be there, schedule a Saturday gathering after the urn has arrived so they have time to make the drive down US 67.
Kids in Midlothian often grow up around horses, goats, barn cats and house pets alike, and each loss can raise its own questions. Offer truthful, simple answers, then let them help: choosing wildflowers, drawing the animal, deciding where a stone goes. Grown-ups might keep a ritual too, such as a quiet evening drive past the pasture on the anniversary, windows down.
A small-town farewell can be as simple as a walk. Some families in and around Midlothian take their dog's usual route one last time with the lead in hand, then gather at home for the vet's visit or the burial. It costs nothing, needs no permission and gives everyone something to do with their hands and feet while they grieve.
With roughly 46,683 residents, Midlothian is the 78th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Midlothian are based about 14 miles away in Grand Prairie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Midlothian sits within easy reach of Cedar Hill (7 miles), Glenn Heights (9 miles) and Mansfield (10 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Midlothian; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
17,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Midlothian has (estimate)
How we calculated this
46,683 ÷ 2.5 = 18,673 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 17,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,450
dog and cat deaths per year in Midlothian, our estimate
How we calculated this
17,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,450 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Funeral traditions in Texas and your pet
When a place splits its funerals between burial and cremation, as Texas does with about 55.7%[5] cremated, local providers usually offer both, and the choice often comes down to one question: do you want a place to visit, or something to keep close? A grave fixes the memorial to one spot; ashes can move house with you.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Midlothian only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How the seasons in Midlothian affect the day
Outdoor farewells in Midlothian are easiest early in the morning or after sunset in June, July, August and September. A garden burial in the midday heat is hard work for whoever digs, and grieving people get light-headed quickly. Set out water, shade and chairs for older relatives, and keep the words short. You can always gather indoors afterwards.
Heat and ashes go together better than heat and burial. Many Midlothian families cremate in summer and hold the burial or scattering of ashes in a cooler month, when a morning in the garden or the park is pleasant rather than punishing. There's no time limit on ashes, so choose a date for comfort, not urgency.

What a pet funeral costs in Midlothian
The ceremony itself is rarely the expensive part of a pet funeral in Midlothian. The cost sits in the body care underneath it: private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, and pet cemetery burial about $831[7]. A viewing may be included or charged by the half hour, and a home farewell can cost almost nothing.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permissions to check in Texas before the ceremony
Before you plan a graveside ceremony in the garden or a scattering on a favorite walk, check the local rules. They're mostly about protecting water and other people's land, so they focus on depth, distance from wells and streams, and permission from whoever owns the land. Here's the picture for Texas.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Midlothian.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Midlothian's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your checklist for the first day
- Decide who needs to be there. A small circle is easier to gather in a day; a bigger gathering can come later.
- Pick the place: cemetery, crematory farewell room, the route of a favorite walk, the garden, or simply home.
- Check anything that needs permission, for example a burial on somebody else's property or scattering ashes in a public park.
- Plan a loose running order: arrival, an opening, shared memories, a song or reading, a small ritual, then the goodbye.
- Arrange the handover or the burial to follow the ceremony immediately, rather than leaving people standing about.
- Look after yourself afterwards. Eat something, let people help, and put the lead away only when you're ready.
The weeks and months after the goodbye

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 14 miles from Midlothian) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Midlothian climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Midlothian?
The closest communities we cover are Cedar Hill (about 7 miles), Glenn Heights (about 9 miles) and Mansfield (about 10 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Midlothian too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Midlothian page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[9] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Midlothian within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
