Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Hawaii
With cremation the choice for roughly 77.3%[5] of people in Hawaii, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.

From first call to farewell: the steps
- Check gently that your pet has died: no breathing, no heartbeat against the chest, eyes open and still. If you're not sure, ring an emergency vet.
- Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly into a sleeping shape within the first couple of hours, before the body stiffens.
- Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for the bladder or bowel to empty after death, and it doesn't mean anything went wrong.
- Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
- If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, the calls can wait for daylight. Nobody minds if you spend one last quiet night beside them.
- Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so the last memory is yours and not a stranger at the front door.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lahaina?
Usually yes. Kailua is about 77 miles away, Honolulu is about 81 miles away and Hilo is about 130 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Lahaina climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How many pet owners live in Lahaina?

Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[9] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
