Wilmington, Delaware
Where a goodbye can happen in Wilmington
Loss can weigh heavily on people who live alone in city apartments or whose relatives are far away. Say it out loud to someone. Support groups meet in the Wilmington and Philadelphia areas, and several national pet loss lines are staffed for callers from any state. When sadness drags on for weeks and affects work or sleep, speaking with a counselor who understands pet loss is reasonable.
Some residents choose an outdoor moment along the Christina Riverfront walkway or beside the rushing Brandywine early on a weekend. Others wait until the remains are back and invite family over for dinner. Neither is wrong, and many households do both a few weeks apart. If you need the ashes by a specific occasion, tell providers when first making contact so they can plan accordingly.
If you live outside Wilmington itself, on a farm or a long rural road, ask any provider whether they'll collect from your address and what the mileage adds. Some families bring their pet to the vet or the crematory to keep the cost down, and hold the farewell at home first, with the car ready and a favorite blanket for the journey.
With roughly 73,512 residents, Wilmington is the largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Wilmington are based about 25 miles away in Philadelphia, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Elsmere (3 miles), Chester (12 miles) and Newark (12 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
27,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Wilmington has (estimate)
How we calculated this
73,512 ÷ 2.5 = 29,405 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 27,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,250
Wilmington families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
27,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,250 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

39%[3]

How Delaware thinks about funerals and cremation
When a place splits its funerals between burial and cremation, as Delaware does with about 59.7%[5] cremated, local providers usually offer both, and the choice often comes down to one question: do you want a place to visit, or something to keep close? A grave fixes the memorial to one spot; ashes can move house with you.
We take the Delaware rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Wilmington, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning an outdoor goodbye in Wilmington's climate
Some families in Wilmington with an old or failing pet dig the garden grave in autumn, before the ground locks up in January, February and December, and cover it with boards and a tarp. It can feel bleak to do, but it means a winter goodbye can end in the garden, as planned, instead of waiting months for the thaw.
Home vet visits still happen through Wilmington winters, but icy steps and early darkness slow everyone down. Clear and grit the path, leave the porch light on and book a daytime slot in January if you can. Warm the room well beforehand too; an old pet who is shivering is harder to settle.

Pet farewell prices for Wilmington families
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Wilmington crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.

Permissions to check in Delaware before the ceremony
Renting changes what you can do. Many leases forbid digging, and a landlord can ask for anything buried to be removed. If you rent in Delaware, a pet cemetery, cremation, or a big garden container holding the ashes sidesteps the problem. The wider rules are below.
Delaware keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Wilmington.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Delaware level first; our Delaware rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Wilmington or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, settle them onto a towel or their own bed somewhere cool. There is no decision you need to make within the hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. That one choice sets the clock for everything else, including when the farewell can happen.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to hold a time, and ask whether they can keep your pet cool until then.
- Send one short message to the few people who should be there, with the time and place.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
- Hold the farewell, and afterwards either bury your pet or pass them over to whoever is collecting.
- Ask for the written total ahead of the pickup, with any viewing or ceremony charge included.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
Many Wilmington families hold a pet's farewell at home in the evening, once everyone is back from shifts, school or the train. A few photos, a lit candle and a favorite toy on the table make a fitting setting. Some providers have a viewing space where you can see your pet once more before cremation; ask about it, and about how long you may stay.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Wilmington?
Usually yes. Elsmere is about 3 miles away, Chester is about 12 miles away and Newark is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Wilmington's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Wilmington, with average highs around 87°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Where are the providers that serve Wilmington actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Philadelphia, about 25 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Wilmington and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Roughly how many pets die in Wilmington each year?
Our estimate is around 2,250. It comes from Wilmington's population (about 73,512), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 27,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [9]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[10] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
