Golden, Colorado
How families in Golden say goodbye to a pet
Colorado's human cremation rate sits near 77 percent, so many Golden families are already comfortable with ashes, urns and scattering. That familiarity does not make grief any lighter. When the heaviness hangs on for weeks, a counselor or bereavement phone line can help. Missing a companion who structured every day of your routine is an entirely expected reaction, and the depth of it simply reflects the bond.
Golden is a college town as well as a county seat, and many Colorado School of Mines students keep small pets while living far from family. If you lose a pet in the middle of a semester, you do not need to handle it alone: roommates, friends or campus counseling can help, and an aftercare provider can explain every option by email or phone before you commit to anything.
If you live outside Golden itself, on a farm or a long rural road, ask any provider whether they'll collect from your address and what the mileage adds. Some families bring their pet to the vet or the crematory to keep the cost down, and hold the farewell at home first, with the car ready and a favorite blanket for the journey.
Golden is home to about 20,390 people, the 32nd-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Denver, about 12 miles (19 km) away, which is where some providers serving Golden are based.
Families in Golden often end up using a provider from Wheat Ridge (6 miles), Lakewood (7 miles, a larger centre) and Arvada (8 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
7,500
Golden: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
20,390 ÷ 2.5 = 8,156 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
630
Estimated dog and cat losses in Golden each year
How we calculated this
7,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 630 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local customs and your pet's farewell
With about 77.4%[5] of people in Colorado cremated, a cremation is the familiar end to a funeral here, and many families want a pet's farewell to echo it on a small scale. You can borrow whatever feels right: a blessing, a moment of silence, a candle, a shared meal afterwards. Whatever your family would do for a person, a smaller, simpler version usually fits a pet.
We take the Colorado rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Golden, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How the seasons in Golden affect the day
If you'd hoped to bury your pet in a Golden garden in winter, ask a pet cemetery whether they can open a grave in frozen ground. Some can with the right equipment, some hold pets until the thaw, and some offer a winter service with the burial done later. Ask what happens and when before you choose.
Some families in Golden with an old or failing pet dig the garden grave in autumn, before the ground locks up in January, February, March, November and December, and cover it with boards and a tarp. It can feel bleak to do, but it means a winter goodbye can end in the garden, as planned, instead of waiting months for the thaw.

Where the money goes in a Golden pet funeral
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Golden crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.

Permissions to check in Colorado before the ceremony
A grave in the garden stays with the house when you sell it, which is the question few people ask at the graveside. Before you bury, think about where you'll be living in five or ten years, then check the Colorado notes below.
Colorado keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Golden.
For Colorado's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Colorado guide. Local rules in Golden can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Keep your pet cool and indoors, especially in warm weather, while you make calls.
- Ask whether a viewing room or witnessed cremation is possible, and how far ahead it needs booking.
- For a pet cemetery burial, ask about the plot, the opening fee, casket or shroud, and whether a graveside service is allowed on the day.
- For a home burial, check the Colorado rules, choose a spot away from water and drains, and dig before the family arrives.
- Collect a keepsake first: a paw print, a clipping of fur, the collar and tags.
- Confirm the price in writing before anyone collects your pet.
- Write down the date they give you for the ashes coming back; the next part of the plan hangs on it.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
A farewell in Golden can be as simple as sitting beside Clear Creek for a few minutes or as planned as an evening at home where friends bring photos and light a candle. Pet funerals are becoming more common, and some families invite neighbors who knew the animal well. The aim is simply that each person who shared life with your pet has a moment to let go.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Golden?
Usually yes. Wheat Ridge is about 6 miles away, Lakewood is about 7 miles away and Arvada is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Golden page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 77.4%[5] of Colorado residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How does Golden's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Golden, with average highs around 88°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Denver to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Denver (roughly 12 miles from Golden) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[8] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
