Kusnacht, Zurich
How families in Kusnacht say goodbye to a pet
Life in Küsnacht often follows the lake: mornings on the shore path, summer afternoons at the bathing places, autumn in the Tobel. When a pet dies, those routines suddenly have a gap in them. Many households hold a private goodbye at home before collection, perhaps with the children and a favourite blanket, and invite friends round later once the first shock has eased.
Counselling for pet loss, called Trauerbegleitung in German, is more widely offered in Switzerland than it once was, and some practitioners around Zurich work in English, French or Italian too. If the sadness has not eased after several weeks, it is reasonable to seek it out. With children, a clear explanation and a small task, such as planting bulbs in autumn, usually helps.
In a smaller place like Kusnacht, a pet farewell usually happens at home or on the family's own land, because that's where the pet lived and where there's space. The vet often comes out for the goodbye, and cremation happens at a crematory in a larger centre such as Zurich. That means the farewell and the handover are yours to shape, without a venue to book.
With roughly 14,000 residents, Kusnacht is the 2nd-largest of the 3 Zurich communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Kusnacht are based about 4 miles away in Zurich, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Kusnacht sits within easy reach of Zollikon (2 miles), Zurich (4 miles, a larger centre) and Lucerne (23 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Kusnacht; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]
In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.
The published sources behind those figures are Memorials.com and CareCredit (Synchrony).

How Switzerland thinks about funerals and cremation
A high cremation rate, about 90%[1] in Switzerland, can make families assume every pet cremation is individual. It often isn't. Communal cremation returns no ashes, and 'partitioned' can mean several pets in the chamber at once. If you want your own pet's ashes back for a scattering or burial later, ask for 'private' or 'individual' in writing.
The Switzerland percentage above is from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Kusnacht, not as a count of pets.
Kusnacht weather and your pet's farewell
Local weather affects two things about a pet funeral: how long a home goodbye can last, and whether an outdoor burial, planting or scattering is practical this week. Providers in Kusnacht know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest now, and whether a viewing room is available if the weather is poor.

Budgeting for a farewell in Kusnacht
Smaller pets cost far less to cremate, which leaves more of the budget for the farewell itself. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg [5], and in France a 20 kg dog costs EUR 150–250 individually against EUR 70–120 collectively [6]. Ask providers near Kusnacht for the same breakdown in writing.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Zurich: Zurich costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Zurich allows for burial and scattering
Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Zurich.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Find a small box and soft bedding, for instance a shoebox with a piece of cloth inside, or the nesting material they used themselves.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. A very small animal produces only a trace of ash; ask the crematory how it's kept apart from other pets' and what container it's returned in.
- For a garden grave, choose ground you're likely to still own in years to come, look up what's allowed locally, and decide on a marker, whether a potted plant or a flat stone.
- Invite whoever looked after them, even if that's one child and one parent. A small animal can leave a big gap.
- Say a few words or read a note, then lay a flower or a pinch of their favorite food on the lid.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, instead of all at once that afternoon, so the space empties gradually rather than in one go.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Küsnacht is home to many international families as well as long-established Swiss households, and customs around loss vary. A candle, a short reading, a prayer or simply a quiet evening together can all feel right. When relatives live abroad, a video call with photos and shared stories can bring everyone into the same moment. Nothing needs to be elaborate for it to matter.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Switzerland?
For people, yes: about 90%[1] of Switzerland deaths end in cremation, according to bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kusnacht follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Kusnacht actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Zurich, about 4 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Kusnacht and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Kusnacht?
The closest communities we cover are Zollikon (about 2 miles), Zurich (about 4 miles) and Lucerne (about 23 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Kusnacht too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[8] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
What if there's no pet cemetery near Kusnacht?
That's common in smaller places. Families often choose a garden burial where rules allow, or cremation followed by burying the ashes, which needs only a small hole and can happen whenever suits. If you want a cemetery grave, look toward a larger centre such as Zurich, and ask whether they'll hold a graveside service when you arrive.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
