Planning a goodbye for your pet in Zurich

Zurich, Switzerland

Choosing where the farewell happens in Zurich

Losing a pet can feel especially lonely in a busy city, and for people who moved to Zurich from abroad, a pet may have been their closest companion and their link to home. Pet bereavement support exists in German and English, and your vet can often point you to it. Some people find comfort in the forest or by the lake, in places they used to visit with their pet.

Zurich children often grow up with a small pet such as a cat, rabbit or guinea pig, and its death may be their first experience of loss. Honest, simple answers work better than euphemisms. Children can join in by drawing a picture for the shelf or placing a flower on the balcony. On the anniversary, some families light a candle by the window.

In a city like Zurich, most farewells start at home or at the family vet. Some local crematories have a viewing room, others don't, and the ones that do may be based on the edge of town or near Zurich. If unhurried time with your pet matters, ask the vet which crematory they use and whether a visit there is possible before you agree.

Zurich is home to about 415,000 people, the largest of the 3 Switzerland communities we cover.

Families in Zurich often end up using a provider from Zollikon (3 miles), Kusnacht (4 miles) and Lucerne (25 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

We built the this numbers from Memorials.com and Cooney, Kogan, Brooks, Ellis, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Zurich

Funeral traditions in Switzerland and your pet

In Switzerland, where about 90%[1] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.

The Switzerland percentage above is from bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Zurich, not as a count of pets.

Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Zurich

Whatever the forecast in Zurich, have a sheltered spot ready for the moment your pet is carried from the house to the waiting vehicle: a porch, a garage, even a large umbrella. Rain or glare on the doorstep turns a careful handover into a rushed one, and it's the moment many people remember most clearly.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Zurich

Some European crematoria include a farewell room with individual cremation and leave it out of the cheaper shared option, so the price difference buys more than just the ashes. Ask exactly what's included before you compare. In the Netherlands, a few pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost, so check your policy too.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Switzerland

A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Switzerland for burying at home and scattering ashes.

For what Zurich itself says, see City of Zürich Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately.

From first call to farewell: the steps

  1. Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
  2. Choose between cremation and a garden grave. A very small animal produces only a trace of ash; ask the crematory how it's kept apart from other pets' and what container it's returned in.
  3. For a garden grave, choose ground you're likely to still own in years to come, look up what's allowed locally, and decide on a marker, whether a potted plant or a flat stone.
  4. Invite whoever looked after them, and that can be just a parent and a child. Small creatures leave surprisingly large holes.
  5. Say a few words or read a note, then lay a flower or a pinch of their favorite food on the lid.
  6. Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, rather than the same afternoon, so the room doesn't feel suddenly empty.

Keeping their memory alive in Zurich

Zurich is an international city, and families bring many traditions to a pet's farewell, whether a quiet moment at home, a candle on the balcony or a small gathering with friends. Providers can often let you say goodbye in person before cremation. Services are usually offered in German, and often in English too, so ask for the language you are most comfortable with.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Zurich?

The closest communities we cover are Zollikon (about 3 miles), Kusnacht (about 4 miles) and Lucerne (about 25 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Zurich too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Switzerland?

For people, yes: about 90%[1] of Switzerland deaths end in cremation, according to bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Zurich follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.

Is a pet funeral common in Switzerland?

Small farewells are common almost everywhere, even if people don't call them funerals. For people, about 90%[1] of deaths in Switzerland end in cremation, and that shapes pet habits too: where cremation is usual, pet farewells often centre on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels more natural.

Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?

Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [6]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.

Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?

Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
