Local rules worth checking in Japan
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Japan as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [9], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Take a breath. If your pet has died at home, lay them on their bed or a towel in a cool room. Nothing has to happen in the next hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. Everything else, the timing of the goodbye included, follows from this single decision.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to hold a time, and ask whether they can keep your pet cool until then.
- Send one short message giving the place and time to the handful of people you want present.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
- Hold the farewell, then hand your pet to the collection team or lay them to rest.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.
