Setagaya, Tokyo
Choosing where the farewell happens in Setagaya
Many Setagaya residents live alone or as couples in small apartments, and a pet is often the centre of daily life at home. Losing that animal can leave a flat very quiet. Tell a friend or colleague what has happened, and let yourself take a day off for the cremation, which is not unusual in Japan. A small farewell with a photo and flowers can help you say goodbye.
Families in Setagaya with children often find a pet's death is the first time a child meets loss. Let them write a letter or draw a picture to go with the pet, and bring them to the farewell if they want to come. Afterwards, visiting a temple's shared memorial for animals together, or lighting incense at home on the monthly anniversary, gives them a way to keep remembering.
Some Setagaya families want a faith leader or celebrant at a pet's farewell. In a city this size, many religious communities have someone who will say a blessing for an animal if asked, and independent celebrants sometimes take pet ceremonies too. Start with your own community; a short prayer at home needs no booking at all.
With roughly 940,000 residents, Setagaya is the 2nd-largest of the 3 Tokyo communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Tokyo (2 miles, a larger centre), Minato (6 miles) and Kawasaki (8 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Setagaya too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
With cremation the choice for roughly 99.97%[1] of people in Japan, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.
That Japan rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Setagaya only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Setagaya weather and your pet's farewell
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

Budgeting for a farewell in Setagaya
In Setagaya, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [5]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.

Before you dig or scatter in Tokyo
Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Tokyo.
Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [7], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.
A pet funeral within a day: how to do it
- Decide who needs to be there. A small circle is easier to gather in a day; a bigger gathering can come later.
- Pick the place: home, garden, a favorite walk, a crematory farewell room or a cemetery.
- Check anything that needs permission, such as scattering in a park or burying on land you don't own.
- Plan a loose running order: arrival, an opening, shared memories, a song or reading, a small ritual, then the goodbye.
- Arrange the handover or burial for straight after the ceremony, so nobody waits around.
- Look after yourself afterwards. Eat something, let people help, and put the lead away only when you're ready.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
Buddhist customs shape grieving in Setagaya, as elsewhere in Tokyo, and many families hold a short farewell with incense before the cremation, then mark the seventh and forty-ninth days, or remember their pet at Obon in summer. Those markers give the weeks after a loss some shape, whether or not your family is religious. A quiet hour by the Tama River may be enough.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Setagaya?
Usually yes. Tokyo is about 2 miles away, Minato is about 6 miles away and Kawasaki is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Setagaya page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
Can I bury my pet at home in Setagaya?
It depends on the country and often the local council. Germany allows it on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil and not in water-protection areas; Dubai doesn't permit animal burial at all; Japan bans it in public places such as parks. Ask your vet or local authority before digging, or consider a pet cemetery.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
