Pet funerals and farewells in Minato

Minato, Tokyo

A goodbye that fits life in Minato

Many Minato residents are on overseas postings or work long hours in the ward's offices, far from family, and their pet was often the one constant in a tower apartment above the city. After the loss, coming home to a silent apartment high above Roppongi or Shibaura can be hard. Feeling flattened by a pet's death is common and understandable. Talk to friends, colleagues or your vet, and look for pet-loss support in English or Japanese, including online groups.

In Japan, a pet funeral with a short farewell ceremony, incense and flowers is common, and Minato families can often choose to attend the cremation and gather the bones with chopsticks afterwards. If you prefer something quieter, a private cremation with ashes returned is just as respectful. Tell the provider which you want at first contact. Some also ask a temple for a memorial service.

Home ceremonies are the most common kind of pet funeral in Minato, and they're simple to arrange. Choose a room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual, such as lighting a candle or tucking a letter under their paw. Then ask the provider to collect afterwards.

Minato's population is around 248,000, the 3rd-largest of the 3 Tokyo communities we cover. Tokyo, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Minato run from there.

Minato sits within easy reach of Setagaya (6 miles, a larger centre), Tokyo (6 miles, a larger centre) and Kawasaki (9 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Minato; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

99.97%[1]

In 2023, 99.97% of deaths in Japan were cremated (1364 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

We built the this numbers from Cooney, Kogan, Brooks, Ellis and CareCredit (Synchrony), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Minato

Funeral traditions in Japan and your pet

With cremation the choice for roughly 99.97%[1] of people in Japan, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.

The Japan figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Minato

Local weather affects two things about a pet funeral: how long a home goodbye can last, and whether an outdoor burial, planting or scattering is practical this week. Providers in Minato know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest now, and whether a viewing room is available if the weather is poor.

Pet farewell prices for Minato families

In Hong Kong, the government's free option is collection to landfill, with no ashes returned (1823 government guidance) [5]. A private provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1–5 kg pet and HKD 3,000 for a dog of 20–30 kg [6]. Ask providers near Minato whether a short ceremony is included or extra.

Permissions to check in Tokyo before the ceremony

Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Tokyo and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.

Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [8], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.

A simple plan for the hours ahead

  1. Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, then arrange the vet's visit to the house and agree what happens afterwards, all in one call.
  2. Fill the days before with small favorites: a slow walk, a patch of sun, the treat that's usually off limits.
  3. Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Staying and stepping out are equally loving, and no one should be pushed either way.
  4. Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, plus any letter, drawing or toy you'd like cremated or buried alongside.
  5. When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
  6. Walk out to the car or van with your pet if you'd like to. Many teams use a stretcher or basket and will let you help carry.

After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close

Some Minato families mark a loss by visiting a temple that holds memorial services for animals, lighting incense at a home altar, or taking an evening stroll along the Odaiba waterfront. In Japan, memorial services at set intervals after a death are traditional, and some families follow this for pets too. If grief is still affecting sleep or work weeks later, a counselor can help.

The services page is the place to compare what is included, run the numbers with the free planning tools, or look at how readers voted in our polls, there are guides for the big decisions and articles for the details. If you live between Minato and Setagaya and Tokyo, either page applies. Every other community in Tokyo, and all of Japan, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Tokyo to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Tokyo (roughly 6 miles from Minato) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Minato page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Minato?

Usually yes. Setagaya is about 6 miles away, Tokyo is about 6 miles away and Kawasaki is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Do pet funeral homes exist near Minato?

Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Minato you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.

Should young children come to a pet's farewell?

Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.

Can I bury my pet at home in Minato?

It depends on the country and often the local council. Germany allows it on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil and not in water-protection areas; Dubai doesn't permit animal burial at all; Japan bans it in public places such as parks. Ask your vet or local authority before digging, or consider a pet cemetery.
