Where a goodbye can happen in Hiroshima
Children often take the loss of a pet hard. In Hiroshima, where many children learn to fold paper cranes at school, folding a few for a pet who has died can be a natural way for them to take part. Let them choose a toy or letter to go with the pet, and give simple, honest explanations rather than vague ones. If grief lasts for weeks, speaking to a counsellor is a sensible step.
Hiroshima's history has made remembrance part of civic life, and many residents grow up understanding how loss can be carried together by a whole community. Grief for a pet is usually quieter and more private, and it can feel out of proportion next to that history. It is not. Hold a small farewell at home, write down memories, sit by the river for a while, or talk with your vet if the sadness feels too heavy.
Witnessed cremation, where you're present as it begins, is easier to find in a metro like Hiroshima than in smaller places, simply because there are more crematories and more staff to schedule around you. It still needs booking. Mention it on the very first call, ask how many people can attend and whether you can bring music or a few words to read.
Hiroshima's population is around 1,194,000.
For a second opinion on price, Fukuoka (130 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Hiroshima routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
About 99.97%[1] of people in Japan are cremated, so most families here have been to a cremation service and know how one feels. That familiarity carries over to pets: a viewing before cremation, a few words said and ashes brought home is a pattern people recognise. It also means crematories are well established, and a farewell room or witnessed cremation is easier to find.
We take the Japan rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Hiroshima, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning around heat, cold and rain in Hiroshima
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

What a pet funeral costs in Hiroshima
In Hong Kong, the government's free option is collection to landfill, with no ashes returned (1823 government guidance) [5]. A private provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1–5 kg pet and HKD 3,000 for a dog of 20–30 kg [6]. Ask providers near Hiroshima whether a short ceremony is included or extra.

Permissions to check in Japan before the ceremony
Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Japan.
Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [8], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: use the pet's name and the word died, and avoid softer phrases like 'went away' or 'went to sleep'.
- Let them choose whether to see their pet ahead of the burial or pickup. Some children find that looking answers things they couldn't have asked out loud.
- Offer choices rather than jobs: picking the blanket, decorating the box or making a card to travel with their pet.
- Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes with room to speak or stay silent, and no adult stepping in to fix it.
- Expect questions later, often at bedtime, then give short, truthful answers when they come.
- Let their teacher or childminder know, which means a withdrawn or tearful child makes sense to the grown-ups at school.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
Buddhist customs shape grieving in Hiroshima, and many families mark the seventh and forty-ninth days after a pet's death, or remember them at Obon. These dates can give structure to grief, and you do not need to be devout to find them helpful. A short visit to the river, some incense and a quiet moment with the family may be enough.

Questions people ask
Why does the Hiroshima page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [9]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?
Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Hiroshima?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Hiroshima?
Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Japan rules allow it.
