Cremation is the usual choice for people in Japan, at about 99.97%[1]. For pets, that often means the funeral is a gathering around the ashes rather than a burial: a celebration of life at home, a scattering on a favorite walk or a small planting in the garden. None of those needs a venue, and all of them can happen weeks later, when everyone is ready.

Before you plan a graveside ceremony in the garden or a scattering on a favorite walk, check the local rules. They're mostly about protecting water and other people's land, so they focus on depth, distance from wells and streams, and permission from whoever owns the land. Here's the picture for Japan.
Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [6], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- If the goodbye is planned, ask whether your vet does house calls and reserve one as soon as you can; home-visit vets around Fukuoka often have no free slots for several days.
- Tell the vet what you'd like around it: time before, time after, and collection only once the family is ready.
- Prepare the room: dim lights, phones out of sight, a blanket, the bed they know.
- Give each person, including children, one small job, whether that's picking a flower or reading a single sentence aloud.
- Say a few words. One memory each is plenty. Laughter is welcome.

How much does a pet funeral cost in Fukuoka?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
Is there a pet cemetery near Fukuoka?
Many large metros have at least one pet cemetery within driving distance, and some human cemeteries now have a pet section. What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
