Pet Funerals in Hiroshima: what to know
We cover 1 communities in Hiroshima, and families in each tell us the same thing: they want time, a clear price and a goodbye that feels like their pet. This page explains how funeral and burial options usually work across Hiroshima, what they tend to cost and what to ask any provider or cemetery.
The first call to a provider anywhere in Hiroshima is easier with four facts ready: your pet's weight, where they are now, whether you want the ashes back and whether anyone wants to be present. With those, a crematory or cemetery can give you a real price and a time. They're also what our request form asks for.

Funeral traditions in Hiroshima and your pet
In Hiroshima, where about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.
We take the Hiroshima percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
The real cost of a pet goodbye in Hiroshima
In Hiroshima, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [2]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.
Public and private options can differ hugely. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward collects pets under 25 kg for a JPY 3,000 fee with communal cremation and no ashes returned [3]; a private communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times that, by our estimate [4]. In one Japanese survey, about 30% of owners felt a funeral would help them avoid regret [5].
| Place and service | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo: witnessed cremation, 20–30 kg dog | JPY 60,500 [6] | Attended, with a monk chanting |
| Tokyo: individual cremation, 20–30 kg dog | JPY 38,500 [6] | Without attending |
| Japan: pet funeral hall package | JPY 60,000 to 80,000 [7] | Ceremony and cremation, 1–5 kg to 25–30 kg pet |
| Singapore: private cremation, 10–20 kg dog | SGD 480 [2] | Columbarium niche from SGD 300 |
| Hong Kong: individual cremation, 20–30 kg dog | HKD 3,000 [8] | Check whether a farewell ceremony is included |

What you can and can't do in Hiroshima
Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Hiroshima and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.
Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [10], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. Ask the clinic to keep your pet in their cold room for a day while you think.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask whether they can visit the clinic to say goodbye before the collection.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
Marking the loss, now and later
If people who loved your pet live far away, a video call during the farewell or a shared online photo album lets them take part. You don't need a paid service; a free call and a shared folder work well. Ask each person to add one photo and one line, and you'll have a keepsake nobody could have made alone.

Questions people ask
Where can I find a pet cemetery in Hiroshima?
Pet cemeteries are most common around the larger cities in Hiroshima, and some human cemeteries now have pet sections. Ask your vet, check your city page on this site or send us a note. When you call a cemetery, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.
What does a pet funeral cost in Hiroshima compared with the US?
Prices differ by country and currency, but the pattern is the same: individual cremation costs more than communal, a cemetery grave more than cremation, and a farewell room or attended service adds to either. Published examples for Hiroshima are in the table above; ask local providers for a written quote.
Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Hiroshima?
Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land have their own rules, and many ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter low and downwind, away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Hiroshima?
Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Hiroshima, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.
Can children be part of a pet's farewell in Hiroshima?
Yes, and most families find it helps. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower or drawing a picture to go with the pet, use plain words like 'died', keep it short and let them step out whenever they want. Our blog has age-by-age ideas.
How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in Hiroshima?
Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [11], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [12]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.
