Pet farewells in Florence: the local picture

For people who have moved to Florence from elsewhere, a pet can be the closest companion and the thing that made a foreign city feel like home. That loss can leave you feeling cut off. Pet bereavement support is available, often online, in Italian and English. Some people find comfort in the Cascine park or up at Piazzale Michelangelo, looking over the city they once explored together.

Children in Florence often grow up with a pet in a compact apartment, where it is part of every moment. When it dies, the absence is felt at once. Honest, simple words help most. Let them draw a picture, choose a photo, or place a small terracotta pot of basil on the balcony in its memory. Each year, a candle and a favourite photo on the table can mark the day.

A mid-size place like Florence usually has one or two crematories and a handful of in-home vets, so availability can tighten on weekends and holidays. If your pet is very ill, it's kinder to yourself to ask now what a home goodbye would involve, who would collect afterwards and whether a viewing is possible, so the day itself holds fewer decisions.

Florence is home to about 382,000 people, the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Bologna, roughly 50 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Florence run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Florence routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest

Because burial still leads in Italy, with cremation at around 38.16%[1], families often ask what to bury a pet in. A cotton sheet, a wool blanket or a plain untreated wooden box all break down naturally. Plastic, vinyl-covered beds and sealed caskets don't, and they can stop a garden grave settling for years.

For the Italy figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Florence rather than as pet data.

When the weather shapes the goodbye

If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Florence, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

Budgeting for a farewell in Florence

In Florence, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room or an attended service. Always ask for individual cremation by name if you want the ashes back.

We keep the detailed Tuscany price table on one page so it stays current: see Tuscany prices.

Before you dig or scatter in Tuscany

Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Tuscany and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.

In Italy, some pet crematoria offer electronic tracing and a certificate, and at least one lets families watch an individual cremation on a monitor on request. Ask whether that's possible if you'd like to be present without standing by the chamber.

From first call to farewell: the steps

  1. Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: say the pet's name and that they died, rather than 'went to sleep' or 'went away'.
  2. Let them choose whether to see their pet before the collection or burial; for some children, seeing settles questions they can't put into words.
  3. Offer choices rather than jobs: which blanket, how to decorate the box, or whether to draw a card that goes with their pet.
  4. Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes and let them say something, or nothing, without anyone correcting them.
  5. Expect questions later, often at bedtime, and answer them honestly and briefly.
  6. Let their teacher or childminder know, which means a withdrawn or tearful child makes sense to the grown-ups at school.

Marking the loss, now and later

Florence is home to long-rooted Florentine families, thousands of students and many residents from abroad, and farewells here take many forms: a quiet moment in the apartment, a small gathering on a terrace, or a family occasion with the nonni present. Find out whether you may stay with your pet until the end, and whether the provider can talk you through things in English if that helps.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Florence?

The closest communities we cover are Siena (about 31 miles), Bologna (about 50 miles) and Portofino (about 108 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Florence too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Where are the providers that serve Florence actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Bologna, about 50 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Florence and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?

Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[6] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.

Should young children come to a pet's farewell?

Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[7] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.

Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Florence?

Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Bologna, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
